k, so, i am looking to upgrade my axle shafts to a chromolly shaft. the rears are easy enough to find, but everywhere i look for front only list a d30 cherokee...no difference right? correct me if i am wrong pleez

and also how do i tell what spline count i have? only way to do it to pull everything apart?:confused:

Same thing for the most part. Yours are 27 spline shafts.

b/c it was only 800 bucks, i can spend the other money that would normally be the rest of the purchase price and buy some quality parts. i wheel hard enough to run alloys, plus i am goin with 33's and a locker up front. those 900 dollar cv's would be killer, but i am goin for a solid budget truck

"you break it we'll replace it warranty"

that right there is worth the price IMO.
I'm running those shafts and don't regret paying "extra" for a minute. Here are two things to consider:

1) Other chromo shafts are still running regular U-joints -- which are known to be a weak point -- especially a full steering lock. (of course the internals are also always a weak point with chromo shafts). Sure u-joints are easy to replace, but a broken u-joint can also take out the ears of the shaft (which means you will need to put in a stock shaft and warranty your chromo shaft). An upgrade to CTM u-joints will almost guarantee you against shaft/ujoint breakage, but given the price of CTMs, you are at a higher price than the RCVs.

2) RCV is honestly the only company I trust to warranty their shafts in a reasonable amount of time at this point. They make their shafts in house, so even if they don't have any in stock, they can make them on demand and not have to wait for a shipment. I ordered my shafts before they were officially "finshed" designing them and given how they pounded out my shafts and overnighted them to me just so I could get to Big Dogs, I don't doubt for a second that the turnaround time for replacement shafts/CVs would be reasonable.

Other companies have been known to take forever to honor their warranties. Alloy USA is owned by some other company now and I don't even know if they warrant the shafts. Superior has been known for very long wait times (months) on warranted parts. I know nothing about Nitro or 10 factory and how good they are with turnaround times on warranties.

That said, regular u-jointed chromo shafts are proven to work much better than stock, so it's up to you whether the extra expense is worth it.

Tell me about it. I called them back in April to order alloy shafts for my D44 rear axle. I was told the shafts were out of stock and would not be available until July. I asked if they could get the manufacturer to make some sooner to which the indignant reply was "we are the manufacturer". So I hung up and called Moser Engineering who manufactured the axles and shipped them out the next day.

There was a thread on Pirate (I think it was this past summer) about Superior supposedly getting their act together and re-stocking oodles of everything. Although, I'm not sure whether they have been able to sustain that or if they are starting to fall behind. Anyone who buys those axles should probably drop them a line to see what the deal is.

All D30s in XJ/ZJ/TJ's were 27 spline stock. Only way it would be different is if you had the aftermarket Super 30 kit -- but if you had the super 30 kit, you would already have chromo shafts. If the previous owner put in a super 30 kit, I'm positive he would have told ya ;-)

ok, so since i posted last on this, I have bought a house. now that 95% of the extras that go along with a house are taken care of, i am getting serious about the ZJ. I looked at the Alloy USA axles for the Cherokee D30, and it says it comes with a 760 u-joint. Are these ujoints too big for the space on the ZJ d30? will this affect my abs sensor ring?? I hate to bring up old posts, but i figure its better than starting a whole new one on the same subject:emb:

if the axles are set up for the dana 30, the ujoint they come with will fit. As far as the abs sensor ring, some come with them, some don't. so make sure to ask before you order them. some guys retro fit the rings onto the new axles as well.. so that is an option too.
