My 2001 Grand Cherokee lift gate will not lock. Latch to open it as well as pushbutton to open window above it work fine. Key fob or lock button will lock all 4 doors, but liftgate remains unlocked. I don't hear any mechanical sound back there when I activate door lock.

Could there be a solenoid that's bad? Perhaps solenoid is good but not getting voltage? How do I get to it, even if just to probe some electrical leads for a pulse of voltage to the switch when doorlocks activated? Where would I find those leads? Is this a common enough problem so that the fix is obvious?

Thank you!

There is a small access opening on the inside of the hatch. If you remove this small access panel you can stick your finger in and feel a small lever on the electric lock actuator. Try moving this lever while you lock/unlock the hatch with the key fob, you may get lucky and free up the mechanism, I did. Otherwise you will have to remove the complete plastic panel on the inside of the hatch to access the lock mechanism.

Thanks for reply. Well this afternoon I bit the bullet and removed trim panel and peeled back the plastic liner enough to see what was going on. Lock actuator was bad. Voltage to it, but no action other than occasional chatter like it was trying to move the lever but couldn't. 10 min trip to "stealership" then $135 later, and now it's fixed. Could have probably found one cheaper online but it's the weekend and I was impatient.

I just purchased the GC 2 days ago, so am sure I'll be back with more questions. Many thanks for responding!
