Okay guys here is a poll I was wondering what ya all think from your expierences, I am going to be running 35's Baja Claws, on a 96 5.2L. I am going to Upgrade to 4:56s and want to do a locker Should I do a 8.8 with the Super88 kit and elimnate the c clips or Keep my Dana 44a and truss it and Find a aussie and run 4:56s all input is appreciated. I am thinking i could sell 44a and help with with costs. whats ya all think

8.8 stronger housing. Better aftermarket support.

35" with 44A may be risky. If you go for 33" I will said 44A. I had 33" with 44A before, they work great.

Lock the 44a and run it till you break it. Then go 8.8...

Well here is the Deal a local offroad shop will cut off all the brackets and weld them onto the 8.8 for me for 185.00 so its gonna be pretty much a direct bolt in. Now if i find a Dana 35 I could easily have them cut brackets off that and sell the dana 44a. I figure around 800 I could have a locked super88. the aussie for the 8.8 is only 230 bucks and 500 for the super 88 kit. then i just need the adapters and such

44a. if you are gonna build a rear axle w brackets and such make it count not a slight upgrade over a 44a. many people wheel 44a s w 35s me being one of them. if im gonna set perches and brackets or much less pay some one to do it id do it on a real axle that is stronger then both. + dont cut and weld on old brackets thats awful man

i would go for the ford 8.8 axle plus M.O.R.E or Teraflex brackets. The 8.8 has better aftersales support and it is bigger and stronger than the Dana 44a, strong enough for the huge 35's Baja Claws radial.

44a is not a WEAK axle.. Both have benefits. If you are gonna build an axle fully it should be a strong axle. 35s trussed 44a is a solid combo if you are destroying 44 parts 8.8 won't hold up much better imo and a 60 or nine inch is a better route.

With the alloy shafts in the 8.8 it is pretty stout. Plus don't forget how nice direct swap disc brakes is. Worth every penny there alone. E-brake cable swaps over too so it will pass inspection if you plan on driving it on the street.

Both axles will run with 35s, however as mentioned, you can get a selectable locker for the 8.8. I was going to do the Super 88 kit, but a well known shop in Phoenix convinced me it wasn't necessary. He hasn't had any problems with the C-clips. Also, where are you going to find a spare Super 88 shaft on the trail if you break one. They are an inch longer than stock. I just added alloy shafts and kept the c-clips with an ARB and kept the stock shafts for trail spares. I think the Super 88 kit is designed for offroad only, as it uses ball bearings instead of roller bearings at the hubs. They will work on the road fine, but two shops cautioned me regarding the difference.

Hey guys. So I know I'm still a noob and this may be a stupid statement, but as far as the Ford 8.8 C-clips go, you don't have to get diff axleshafts to eliminate the clips. When I had my Mustang (8.8 rear), I got a C-clip eliminator kit, and if I remember correctly, it was a small kit that did not require new, longer shafts. Am I wrong; is the Explorer 8.8 different?

44 vs 8.8? ive been through 4 44a rears. the only reason i kept swapping was price. i can get 44a's for $70 and swap in a few hours. one day ill take the time to get the 8.8 and bracket kit and be done with it. i hate the 44a......POS. one notch better than a 35
