seriously if you see a good amount of snow every year and you drive the jeep alot youd be much safer and better off with a selectable locker. ill buy the lockright if you do go that route... i live in this crappy desert barely much snow except for up north. plus i only drive my rig to the trail and every now and then around the block.

yah trying to drive on snowy icy roads with the front locked would be a horribly scarey experience I would imagiene. You could whip some hella fast donuts tho lol

Put the lockright in yesterday while replacing front axle U joints. Got it filled with lube this morning and took it for a spin... No unlock at all, all but impossible to steer. Could hear the stress on the power steering. In less than 200 yards in 2WD, I broke 2 pins...

So, took it back out. Don't have to worry now how it will affect winter driving.

Just to qualify my comment above about driving in the snow, I was mainly referring to highway driving. I found a front Detroit locker to be so white knuckle that I always cruised 2WD with the hubs unlocked on the highways. Driving at lower speeds, stop-n-go around unplowed city streets then lockers are a blast!

Lunch-box lockers in the front more-or-less behave like an open differential when in 2WD; how successful they are depends on the specific design. Aussies are rather successful. Lock-Right's are a bit less successful. They both can make noise as the internal mechanisms work to keep the dog gears disengaged. In fact, Richmond gear recommends lockout hubs for front Lock-Right applications. The Powertrax is a refined version of the Lock-Right but I have never studied the design and have no clue how they operate. I'd say give it a try and see for yourself.
what are you talking about here, in the second section begginning with "Lunch-box lockers..."??

If i was Richmond gear, aussie or whoever, i would reccomend lockout hubs as well.

Unless im mistaken, Richmond owns both lockright and Powertrax. I have the powertax in the rear. Its a goofy locker IMO. engages violently sometimes, and disengages at wierd times on the road.

you did something wrong, or got a bad locker.

Probably did something wrong, but it was used and I got it for $100. I had to get two broken pins out of it, but it came with new pins and springs. About the only thing I see I could have done different was only one spring, not doubled. We had to slightly chamfer the edges where the pics slid in because of the previously broken pins.

On the other hand, the friend I got it from feels bad and is giving me another one. And with that in mind, how would one determine a bad Lockright? I mean, theres what 6 or 8 parts not counting springs and pins? Is there a way to recondition them if they are fubarred? I'm getting pretty good at pulling unit bearings now... Should be easy on the trail.

Anyway, whether I try this one again, or a different one, I'll wait till spring now. If I pull the axles and carrier again, I want to replace the axle seals too.
