Do you eventually plan on swapping axles? If so, it would probably be smart to go cheap and get lunch box lockers, like Aussies or Lock Rights. Either way, I'd be weary of locking the 35, as there are many instances of locked 35s snapping shafts frequently.

I was thinking of getting the 30 spline super 35 upgrade for shafts and a good locker or selectable locker in the rear. I thought about a D44A swap but not worth it now that the only locker made for it is no longer made. I heard about a ford 8.8 swap but don't know if its a direct swap or not and what kind of aftermarket support there is for it. My biggest problem is I have no one close to me to help with any fab work so I am looking for the easiest way to get a decent rear end.
 
There's a ton of support for the 8.8, but it's not a bolt in swap. Honestly though, it's still probably your best bet. The super 35 kit is decent, but it's a lot of money to be putting into an axle that's still not all that great. There are a lot of 44A lockers popping up now, but they are bringing in a pretty high price, so that's an option that's getting almost more expensive than it's worth. You could still probably get the 44A and the Aussie locker for around $550 if you can get a good deal on the rear. I'd look into the 8.8 to be honest with you, great axle, tons of options for it, and it can hold up to some serious abuse.

Yea the 8.8 sounds like a really good option but with no fab tools or help looks Like I am looking for a 44a or beefing up the 35. Only down fall is I will have to pay someone to make and weld on a trus if I get a 44a.

And unless you get a lunchbox locker or have the skills, you will have to pay someone to install a selectable locker.

Also, if you have the 249 transfer case or you like to use the Full time feature on your 242, you will have to get a selectable locker in the front.

If I were you and you can afford to have lockers installed but can't afford to swap axles, I would be a OX or Eaton E-locker in the front and a Truetrac in the rear.
 
yeah, your gonna want the 35 trussed as well, i think all the stock rear axles have weak housings.
i think you are smart wanting selectable rear locker, but IMO you should lunchbox lock the front first and see where that gets you. save lots of $$ and youll be amazed how much better it does.
 
An axle swap sounds like a plan in your near future [smilie=bal_cool.gif] Just seems like a lot of money to be throwing into two subpar axles. Like everyone else said, the 8.8 can take some serious abuse and a hp30 upfront would be a huge upgrade to your lp and it has the same 5 by 4.5 bolt pattern. Just my .02

Yea I think I am going to pull a HP30 out of a cherokee to replace the front since this is a bolt in swap. I would have no problems doing a 44A in the rear but since the support isn't there I am not sure its worth the time and money. I am wrong in saying they discontinued the Aussie Locker for it???
 
I keep hearing everyone say that the ONLY locker for the D44a is the Aussie but then what about the Rubicons? Don't they use the D44a also? They have some sort of selectable lockers. Why can't we use the locker out of one of them?

If this question has already been answered elsewhere, then forgive me for bringing it up but I'm new here and haven't had a chance to get through too much of this forum yet.

The Rubicons has a d44 not a d44a so unfortunately the locker in the rubicon won't fit in the aluminum axle the grands have. You are correct though, they have an electrical selectable locker.
 
Dont even bother waisting your money on the 35, its a complete waste. Build up an 8.8 or something relative in beef and call it a day
