EDIT: San Bernardino National Forest is closed so we are going to Los Coyotes Indian Reservation on Saturday, October 26 instead. See below for details.

Well I got that itch and I need to go wheeling in Big Bear. A number of people have expressed an interest in wheeling up there recently including some out of towners so I am going to do a run on Saturday, Oct 26. The really cool advantage to that weekend is it is the last weekend of the:

Big Bear Oktoberfest

Just think, keg sized rocks during the day and rock sized kegs at night . Trail-wise at this point I am thinking of either John Bull or Pontiac Sluice but am totally open to suggestions as long as it includes one of those two :D.

Big Bear run

I read yesterday in the L.A. Times that the forest service was closing the Angles and San Bernardino forests for at least the next 30 days due to the fire danger.?

Those bastards! Yeah I read the same thing in the Press Enterprise. Kind of puts a damper on things doesn't it.

Drought, fire risk forces forest closures
10/03/2002

SAN BERNARDINO -- Portions of the San Bernardino National Forest will be closed starting Friday because fire and drought conditions are considered extreme, federal officials said.

The closures will go into effect at noon Friday and could last at least a month, said Mike Dietrich, U.S. Forest Service chief for the national forest. The vast majority of the 671,686-acre forest, east of Los Angeles that spills into the desert, will be off-limits to the public but towns such as Big Bear City and Lake Arrowhead will remain open.

Hiking, horseback riding and off-road vehicles will be banned, Dietrich said.

Angeles National Forest, northeast of Los Angeles, remains closed after the largest wildfire in Southern California this year burned more than 38,000 acres and destroyed 76 buildings. The fire was 100 percent contained Tuesday. Officials have said they do not plan to reopen Angeles until there is enough rainfall to mark the end of fire season.

Forestry officials are also considering similar closures in the Cleveland National Forest north of the Mexican border and east of San Diego. A decision is not expected until next week.

The San Bernardino National Forest is one of the most popular recreational spots in the state and is visited by more than 10 million people each year, Forest Service spokesman Matt Mathes said.

"We do not like to close the forest to public use unless conditions are extreme," Dietrich said. "We are stepping up to the plate and taking the appropriate action because of fire danger."

Parts of the national forest were last closed in 1999. In 1972, the entire forest was shut down.

Mathes said federal officials are wary of fire conditions in San Bernardino because it is one of half a dozen national forests that abut major urban areas.

Closures

Oh well, the deserts will be cooling down and allways open. So far...

Chuck I am game for just about anywheres. At this point the temperatures have dropped a bit so I would think we should be ok. My last trip to LCIR did get cancelled so I wouldn't mind doing that either though.

Like I said in the other topic, I'm in for a run as long as one of 2 things happen;

Either the run is bone-stock WJ friendly or someone has an empty seat for a ride along.

LCIR is about 160 miles from Santa Clarita. It is near a small town in SD county called Warner Springs southeast of Temecula.

Take the 15 south from the 91 for about 40 miles.
Exit at the 79 and go southeast for about 40 miles.

Here is a website with a little info about it (except their directions are from SD):

Tankota's LCIR Run Report

Edit: By the way, I just found that site on the web and know nothing about its owner or the organization. Don't contact them or they will have no idea what you are talking about :D.
