Alright folks... I did a search and didn't really find squat... I'm am swaping out my D35 for a 44a.... Has anyone on here done this swap? Yea yea yea... I know a D44a doesn't have much on a REAL 44 or an 8.8 for that matter, but just pretend you got one free and you are broke... and after wheelin the 8===> ~~~ outta my locked D35 w/ 32's its knocking on heavens door... From what I can imagine this has to be quite a straight foward swap, but was curious if anyone had done this, and if they ran into any issues of any kind that might be handy to know in advance. Just be absolutely sure that they are the same gear ratio, or at least within 5-10%.

Not if its a trail only rig! ;)

please search the thread I created fir this very topic. I did it in a TJ instead of a GC, but the principle is the same.
The thread is called Dana 44a build-up

Alright... I appologize in advance... but [smilie=bal_thanx.gif] on the links... there are def some some pros for the d44a but, some serious cons that I think I can avoid via scrap metal/welder/truss that will cost me nuthin due to my situation... I may have had too many boozy pops tonight, which is very likely, but I gathered naturalbornmudder gave up on the 44a and went 44hd... ok AWSOME [smilie=bal_cool.gif] , and I'm jealous.. but I can't find a deal on a 8.8/44.... So Solitude thanx for responding, but will my driveline and current ujoint mate up, as in "same" Ujoint(off the top of your head)??? This will be interesting to me... I'm looking for "simple and quick" to get me wheelin again soon... to be honest my locked D35 w/ 32s have held up beyond my comprehension, but it's a time-bomb nevertheless.....

Long story short and boozy pops in mind, I destroyed my D30 housing recently, (go figure I was ready for the D35c to go first :-x )... so my broke college student azz living on the GI Bill who's on a budget, has a line on a HP 30, and a tru-trac for CHEAP(non-disconnect axle)... but gears are an issue... I'm runnin 3:55 right now and if I need a new axle and internals why not go lower right??... duhh... Here's the kick, no way in heck I'm gonna throw lower gears in my D35.. heck I'll probably gernade it the next trip out. This is where the nice cheap D44a above comes in w/ 3:73, but I'm considering takin the hit and throwin in 4:10/4:56's front and rear and throwin an Aussie in it, which is up my alley... cause I wheel quite often, as in twice a week at least. Front and rear axles under a grand... no pun intended  ... w/ posi and locker??? Purty hard to beat if you ask me. I'm tired of typin and need more beer  , BUT I must ask what would you guys do on a real tight bud get [smilie=bal_ask.gif] Yeah yeah... it's always best to do it right the first time, but to give you and idea of where I'm going with my ZJ, when I have another DD there's gonna be D60's under my ZJ.... you get the picture... no pussyfootin around here.... Hope this thread made sense

Prehaps one too many boozy pops. The Dana 44HD and the Dana 44A are the same thing. 44HD is the real name, 44A is more common though. So yeah, naturalbornmudder didn't give up on the 44A, he just used the real name. Good luck with the build up, if you can score a 44A cheap, do the swap, and aussie lock it.

if your on a budget sounds like your on the right track if you can get the axles for very cheep. If your gonna throw D60's later dont bother on gears now, i'd just regear one, cause it's prob gonna be more $$$ than u spent on the axles. If you get luck you can pick up 2 axles w/ same ratio. I'm running 3.73 and 33's, deff. would like 4.56 but it works 4 now, your running 32's should be better, youv'e lasted this long w/3.55's. [smilie=1beer.gif]

the 44a and the 44rd are one in the same. I was running the 44a in my TJ trussed, locked, and 456'ed. I bashed that axle like no other and it still survived.
Like you kind of said, do it right the first time. 456 it, aussie it, and forget it.

Exactly, im in the process of locking and gearing mine. The axle is heavily trussed and skid plated so no worries there. Invest in a truss of some sort to keep it all together.

boozy pops.....you must be holdin out on me when i come over.
All i get is busch lite

anyway, just match up the 3.73 that your 44a is comin with.
Just my .02, if i was in your boat.
It will be worlds better than what you had before and save a couple more hundred dollars, and phonecalls.
