On stock D30/D35...
I was breaking stock D35 axle shafts with 32 BFG MT's a number of years ago. It was consistent and I've never been a heavy throttle kind of driver. Expect breakage with 33's - carry extra shafts.

tres treses.... they are waayyy better then 32's!   id say go with what ever you can offord.. 32 11.5's are pretty close but might last longer since they wonht rub as much.. 33's of course are bigger and will b better in the long run.. i wish i got 33's instead of 31's but oh well.. now i got to wheel the piss out of these so i can upgrade

If you go for 33", you are opening a whole can of warms.
First of all, you will need re-gear for sure!! 32" you can barely make it without re-gearing & you need to avoiding long up-hill freeway driving.
Second of all, I am pretty sure your height will not fit 33" if you do off-roading. If you only do street driving, then you are OK.
Thirdly, if you go 5" you will need to do some adjustable arms & drive shaft changes.
Number four, you will need new set of wheels with different off-sets (3.75")
If you add every thing together, the different between 32" & 33" are not just the cost of tires, but thousands more! I think the cheapest & safest way is 2"~3" BBs with 31" unless you are prepare to go all the way! I have been there and done that.

I disagree, I'm on 32's and could go 33's w/ either minor rear trimming or rear lca's, but u may wanna get all four lca, i've got some issues up front with my steerin from how my axle has gotten rolled but i'm at 4.5" up front.

bb + 31's (imo) = decent starting place

i think it's cheaper to do a f>r swap trim and go 32's, but with some pucks go with 33's, but personally i'd trim and do ca's and go 33's, then axles and regearing then go higher and bigger tires...

Go ahead a set of 33", drive around the freeway for a few days, go rock crawling a bit and have fun, then let me know if you still disagree. I was exactly thinking like you when I had my 32"s.

One inch doesnt have THAT much of a difference. Then again ever Jeep is a case to case thing. Like I said I have had several friends with different set ups who ran 33'son their ZJ'S and never had a problem with gearing, shafts, fitting, or weaking their axels to the point of breaking axels. Although it would be worth it to have a good set-up underneath to start off with.

That's the truth! It seems that even though we all drive the same vehicle, they all act different! For me, 1" (31s to 32s) made all the difference in the world. I have a 4" Pro-Comp lift right now and the 31s were fine, but now the 32s rub even w/ minor trimming. I'm taking out my 1" spacers and adding 2" ones in the next day or so, so I'll see how it is then, and if I remember, I'll let you know how it goes. But my advice is go w/ the 32s for now.

I say get the bigger tires if you plan to keep them. But if you are going to get these tires and build it up beefy then i would get the smaller tire, more then likely cheaper and not going to break anything while you are saving for build-up cash. And save your money for arms, trackbars, springs, axles, big meats...etc

my thing is... say u plan on going bigger in the future but doown the road...
go ahead and get what will fit best right now, then begin setting up for the new suspension and tires, like new axles, steering stuff, ca's, shocks, and build up, install what u can put what you can't in the garage (or where ever) and then when u get new tires and have everything complete put it all together... dont go with smaller bc u wanna save money to do ur build sooner, shit happens, most likely it'll be gettin postponed... but do whatever is best for your specific jeep, hell i dont rub a bit and i'm on 32's but i wouldnt run anything smaller than 33's on 5"... i'd do 5.5-6" and do 35's....

I'm at 4 1/4" higher than factory with32X11.5X15"BFG A/Ts on 15X7 stock wheels wiyh 1" spacers. I had to trim some plastic from the front bumper cover only because I have adjustable lower arms pushin the axle out to get my caster in spec. No other trimming and they do fill the wheel openings completly. With 33s you will be cuttin steel. Click to see rear tire stuffed, you will see that she is filled up.

I didn't finish readin the whole post, but this is all preference... I have 32s which is all I could fit, and I really feel I was pushin the envolope w/ a stock D35 w/ a locker even running stock gears... hence=timebomb, unless its just a road rig and you wanna look cool you'll be fine, otherwise upgrade the rear end if you're gonna throw 33's on and wheel it, and when I say wheel it, I'm not talking about mud puddles and and dirt roads.

you said you felt like the 4.0 was slow enough with 31"s.. It's barely gonna move with 33s. Size wise, i'd go with 33"s, but you DD it, and I would go with the 32"s just so it isn't so dead slow.

if you're going to regear- forget everything i just said.

Everybody are entitle of their opinions. But I am not speaking of my opinion, I am speaking from my experience going from 32" to 33". A lot of people will want you to do it to see what will happen. So you can do it and pay your lesson for them. If I would be you, I will do it, show pictures and tell them how easy it is, so they will all be sucker into doing it. That way you will not be the only one that pay the price to go through this along. By the way, My V8 feels pretty weak with 4.10 gears on 33".

not trying to talk shit but if you have poor power with 4.10's there is some kinda problem.... i have stock 3.73's and 31's with no problem in the power department... 4low... 4get bout it. very powerful.

any way run what ever you want.. ima get 33's on 4 inch lift with stock axles... break stuff then upgrade.. eventually new axles and 35's.. all jeeps should be on 35's look around.. you will never feel complete until your on 35s and full widths its a fact. get 33's. a broken axle is a great way to convince the wifey you need a new one

Maybe my feeling of power is different from yours. My car felt great and got better MPG then stock when I had 31" with stock gear. When I got 32" with stock, it felt weak. I thought 4.10 is enough for 33" with LA kit. But it felt weak. But the point is, I have done it, so I am not speaking out of my prediction or theory.

Besides, the guy has a V6 not V8. There is a power different to start with. It will be irresponsible to suggest him to get on 33" or even 35" on stock gear. He is going to hate the car! Plus it really sucks to break stuff on the trail.

Not all ZJs act the same as others. Like I said before my good friend rode 33x12.5 Interco SSRs (Truely 33ins compaired to BFGs and others which are a bit smaller and plus the ssrs weight more). He only had the 4.0 and stock gears and axels and rode it for a couple years. Every time we went driving he would break the tires loose on road or where ever we were. Only difference he had that gave him a bit more power was an intake and glasspack. So not all zjs are the same, but if he wants to be safe than get 32's but 33's wouldnt hurt that much either
