i have a 1996 grand cherokee V8 5.2. the jeep was mint till it got towed cause of my dads parking tickets. from my experince in towing cars....it had to been towed by the front and the big wheels locked and it ruined my differenital. a mech opened it up and said the gears were worn and i had to replace the rear end.

my question is can i just replace the gears instead of the whole rear end?
and if i can...what gears should/can i put? the oem or something better?

i have a fulltime 4wd 5.2

p.s. my tranny has slipped badly and im pretty sure its cause of the rear end being out of wack. my dad took it somewhere and they supposdly fixed the slip problem( how i dont know) but its back worst then ever...

question..somtimes when its in drive it wont move at all..i have to put it to 2 and go then put it to drive....i probably need it rebuilt right? wrong? 156k on the jeep

if they towed your vehicle with 2 wheels on the ground it has smoked your tranny/transfer case if they didnt put the transfer case in neutral.

ironicly enough i started working as a tow truck driver with a different marashal and did the same thing...reposes peoples cars that were scofflaws with parking tickets.a fellow tow truck driver saw the dent on my passenger fender and he said it was made by my jeep locking and that made it drop in the dynamics arms while it was towed.

my jeep was MINT....i loved it...after that tow..garbage....

so the tranny is done right?
im going to check about what gears it is when i get under there later...

that'd be my bet!

i called up a place just now and it said its going to cost me 1100 for a tranny rebuilt.

im going to check what gears i have and post it here and get ur advice.
thanks

Sounds like the towing company should be liable. That is what they do for aliving. They have insurance to cover their dumb*ss mistakes like this.

I'll bet if they towed a high end AWD Audi and f*cked it up, they'd pay!!! I say pay an attorney $150 bucks to mail them a certified letter threatening lawsuit or whatever the atty advises. got to be cheaper than the rebuild.

what happened between my dad, the tow yard and myself is a soap opera.

i dont know really who did what...i could find out if i went down there probably.... but it'll most likely make me mad. just another mistake to learn from.

i dont know to spend the 2000 or so(tranny, rear end, tires, tune up, radiator) or justsell it for 1500 or whatever get for it...and take the 2000 and add it to the lets say 1000 and add another 1500 and buy a 1997 limited V8 with90-110k

New to the forum so hello to ALL!!! Lots o good stuff on here, also looking forward to my first GSE this year....

Anyway after reading the post and driving tow trucks for sometime. Read your receipt from the tow company, you should have encountered additional charges for a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The PD department rates are usually set for a standard tow and additional charges allowed for flat bed or dolly wheels to be used.

If there was no record on your receipt of the method of towing or additional charges for such you may have a case. If a flatbed or dolly wheels were used I think it was just bad timing or a coincidence.

**Note with a flatbed and no keys the vehicle must be dragged or skidded. This sounds bad but I have never encountered a problem from dragging as most if almost all the vehicles I towed in 7 years were towed this way. So that argument wont work either, just an FYI.

Good luck wit the ride.
