I recently purchased a 94 ZJ Loredo with 140k on the odometer. It is full time FWD and has a 4.0 that was replaced by the dealer at 122K. Is the full time four wheel common. Is it true full time or only four wheel when it senses slipping. Also how reliable is the transmission and transfer case on this truck. I know the 4.0 motor is very rliable, I have one in my base Cherokee with 124 k on it. Still running strong. With 140 should I be looking for any major replacememts in the future. This car spent most of it's life as a grocery getter.

The pre-96 full time four wheel drive transfer case (249, or Quadratrac,) sends power to each driveline via a Viscous Coupling that acts similarly to a limited slip differential. At over 120k, I would be suspecting it's time is coming to an end. The symptom is this: Go into a full-lock turn. If the VC is (going) bad, you'll get wheel skip and chirp, or bucking.
