Sorry, let me rephrase myself, I will add the 87-89 XJ 44 axle to my list of axles to look for. Also, tell me more about the Scout axles. What year should I be looking for, any particular year I should avoid?

sorry, I missed this earlier. I do not know much about scout axles other than that the scout 44's were very common, were pretty much all the same, i.e. no good years vs. bad years with those, and an iron 44 is pretty much an iron 44, no matter what rig it is under. The spring perches and shock mounts may be in different place, or the axle tubes can be a little wider than others, but as far as the center section, all iron 44 stuff is interchangeable, IIRC.

rubicon axle

would Rubicon D44 axle bolt right in?

no, it isnt a direct bolt in. The bracketry would need to be cut off of your stock axle and welded on the Rubi axle. That, however, is not a big problem as long as you give thought to pinion angle and such. Also, I do not remember which U joint and yoke the Rubi 44 uses. When I went from my 35 to the 44a, I had to buy a hybrid U joint that was longer on one axis then the other so I could reuse my driveshaft without have to swap the U joint yoke tabs on it.

Keep in mind that anything you do to the rear axle, you need to do to the front axle, gear wise. This may sound elementary to some, but I have seen it before. The gear sets must match between front and rear axles. Do not run 4.10 rear gears and 3.73 front gears. Bad juj-ju!

Not too bad of a problem to deal with to get an air selectable locker, 4.10's and such.

Great thanks! I guess once I start really looking for an axle, I'll just have to take measurements as I find them. If it fits, I'll bring it home and build it up.

So I'll start looking for (keep in mind all these axles will need new brackets and spring buckets all the way around):
1. D44 87-89 Cherokee (hard to find but a good width match).
2. D44 from a Scout. No specific year but may be a close match.
3. Ford 8.8 from a 95+ Explorer. Wheels with less backspace and I should be good to go.

Hopefully I can start working on this soon. Thanks for all the help!!!!
