XJ and ZJ front ends (and TJ for that matter), are all coil spring front ends, Are they interchangable? A buddy of mine's cousin blew up his 2001 XJ's frontend and wants a cheap junkyard fix so, I was wondering about interchangability. The only problems I could think of would be antilock brake sensors and gear ratios, is anything else? [smilie=bal_ask.gif] Thanks!

I'm thinking maybe width.

I think the D30's in the front of ZJ's are wider than XJ's. But if not, then that's sweet!

They are the same!

A buddy of mine just put a set of rubicon axles under his. Only difference is the steering.

XJ/TJ/ZJ are interchangeable except for as you said. The differences would be vacuum disconnect (84-92 XJ on some), gear ratios (as you said), brakes/knuckle/rotor/unit bearing offset on some years (use the ones off the axle you have), and abs or not.

One other difference is the caster adjustment is done at the lower frame bracket on some & at the lower axle bracket on others. Not a problem if you have adjustable lower arms though.

they are the same. note: in 01 cherokees changed from a cast rotor to a composite rotor and also the wheel bearings are different. remember the old brake rotor recall. if you put a 01 brake rotor on a 02 wheel bearing, the rotor will bite into the knuckle. i think the width issue is incorporated into the wheels.

Knuckle/unit bearing mounting surface to rotor/unit bearing mounting surface measurements/bolt patterns.

84-89 1.81" XJ/YJ 5 on 4.5" kunckle to rotor mounting surface offset
90-98/99 2.12" XJ/YJ/TJ 5 on 4.5" kunckle to rotor mounting surface offset
99-04 WJ 2.12" 5 on 5" kunckle to rotor mounting surface offset
99/00-01/06 TJ/XJ 1.91" 5 on 4.5" kunckle to rotor mounting surface offset

Well, now I feel dumb, turns out it's a 2001 GRAND Cherokee (he just generalized and said Cherokee) , he never mentioned that little bit of info to me (the Jeep is in another state so, I have never seen it). I am really sorry about that error there. Thank you very much for all the info though! Now I guess I have to ask, what kind of interchangability is there for the 2001 Grand Cherokee's front axle? Are they the same as (or similar enough to) the rest? [smilie=bal_thanx.gif]
