Problem:

Ok!! Here is the skinny. After 140k my motor is going south quickly. Last Wednesday on my way home I noticed the steering felt funny (kind of mushy and then stiff) I'm thinking power steering pump. I crest the next him and start down the other side and the jeep shudders. As I reach my exit and let off the pedal it dies. After getting it stopped I attempt to restart it and it fired but idled extremely rough. As I was trying to figure out the problem a fellow NAGCA member stopped (Zj95Maxx [smilie=bowdown.gif] ) stopped to see what he could do to help! [smilie=bal_cool.gif] I used his cell to get a hold of the wife and report in (If your married you'll understand!!!!!). I limped home by holding the RPM above 1500. Take it to the shop the next morning and find out it has jumped timing, wait it gets better.......... I also have a front main bearing gone or a cracked crank.

Solution:
I did some research and finally decided to just replace the entire engine. I found a 2001 5.9 with 37K out of a Ram 1500 that had rear end damage. I looked into rebuilding it ($4300) and also a long block ($1700) and the donor ($1800). So I went with the donor. the salvage yard has even had a chance to pull the engine yet. I looked it over and I cant figure out why the insurance totaled the truck most of the damage was to the box.

My question or request is I would like anybody that has had any experience with engine replacement to tell me do's don't's, tips , trick, anything that could make this job go as smoothly as possible!!!!!!! [smilie=bal_thanx.gif]

Just sounds a little strange. I have never heard of either in 19 years of Jeep. I have seen distributor timing jump but the timing chain. It's a non contact motor so even a timing change wouldn't hurt anything. Never had a cracked crank. Seen cracked heads though.

Can't think of much for the swap but replace the water pump and hoses while you are in there.

i've only seen one case of that happening, and that was in my dad's old '85 S10 work truck that had a POS 2.8L. I've got 279,000 miles on my 5.2L and i haven't had a problem with it. But it has crossed my mind to replace the timing chain....

At about 140K my '96 5.2L had a coolant leak in the timing chain cover, so replaced the chain also.
I would talk to one of the mechanics at the local Dodge/Jeep dealer about the differences between the two that you need to be aware of since they work on both. Might have to swap the ECM also.
Good Luck!

[b]Update[/b]

I've taken out the old and installed the new yesterday. ZJ Woody you would be correct. The wiring harness' are different, along with the injectors and exhaust manifolds. Hardest issue to deal with so far has been some manifold bolts that snapped off on the good engine.

I did talk to Jeep and dodge mechanics. I really beginning to hate going to those places. At first they wouldn't give me any info. finally a dodge mechanic gave a little advice. It wasn't much help all they wanted me to do was bring the jeep in so they could look at it. Price: a million cajillion dollars plus labor plus shop fee plus .....................

This is why I just replaced the animal. Got to go and finish putting in the radiator, fill with fluids and fire it up.

Everything went together fair. Small issue with the header bolts breaking off. The fuel injector ports on the plenum needed to be polished to prevent o'ring damage. The temp dropping to the 20's in the evening. The good news is the engine fired up as soon as I engaged the starter.

Anybody looking for a 360 block for a stroker project. It's free to whom ever wants it!! You just have to come and pick it up.
