So I'm going ot be doing a 249-231 swap and one of my friends is swapping a 242 into his MJ (I think it's a 92, but I could be wrong). The MJ currently has a Vacuum 231 with internal slipyoke.

Apparently the MJ has some sort of vacuum activated front axle engagement -- I don't entirely understand it yet.

But anyways, do you think it'd be possible to swap that 231 into my 93ZJ? I wasn't sure how the "vacuum" stuff or the internal slipyoke would affect the install.

Personally i'd stay away from vacuum operated units. They are generally troublesome and vacuum lines break easily. Just get a mechanically operated 231 and skip the headache of having to figure out a vacuum system for the Tcase.

A 242 is better, but a 231 will do. That's all i have to say about that.

the vacume has nothing to do with the 231 there is a shift indicator that allows the vacum to lock the front vac 30 does nothing in the case.

Plus the 231 has alot more options for upgrades and less internals to f-up

That's my reasoning behind going after the 231. I would probably go for the 242 if it was my DD, so I could have the 4full, but my ZJ's pretty much only used for wheeling, lugging junk, and driving when I get sick of my Civic :) Plus I hear that the 231 is a bit more heavy duty.

Any ideas on how the internal slipyoke will impact the installation (if at all)?

Nope the stock 231/242 is the same strength wise dispite ratings on NVG. Both will break in the same spot (where the speedo gear rides).

The Advantage of the 231 is you can get aftermarket HD upgrades like the SYE/mainshaft and wide chain kits that are not offered for a 242.

The 249 I thought had an internally lubed slip yoke also. There might be a driveshaft/slip yoke length difference though.
