my rear end whines like there is no tomorrow. I had it "serviced" at jiffy lube thinking replacing the gear oil may solve the problem, but no avail.
i did a search for a ford 8.8 swap but i might be doing something wrong.
I'm about to give this jeep to my dad and don't want to have the rear end to go out on me or him.
any guidance would be appreciated

its a 93 4.0 Laredo with 195000 miles on the chassis

1. Don't go to Jiffy Lube, they are known for screw ups. 2. Make sure they actually put gear oil back in. 3. The gears or bearings may have just gone bad, they do that. How old are they? Original?

Pretty typical, even with lower mileage.......
Carrier bearings are going (actually probably been gone for a while)
Need to pull the rear axles to get the gears out and get at the bearings.
Not for the faint hearted. Need some cool tools to compress everything back together proper. Assuming it's the dana 44 like mine

how hard is it to change the pinion bearing? mine does the same thing, has done it since 195,000 miles and im at 240,000 now, and its gettin worse, i used to be able to have it go away some times when i was on the gas, or in corners, now its just almost always there. Leaks gear oil outta the pinion also.

I second the pinion bearing.

Also i'm just completely amazed at the mileage you guys have on these rigs. Original Motors? I only have 156000 just about and thats a '95.

my ZJ shows 235,000 miles, and i put my 31's on at 204,000 miles. So ive got about 240,000 miles on my ZJ now. Its all original with me being the second owner of it. I got it at 188,000 miles in Jan 04. Most of the miles it came with are freeway miles and i have put mostly freeway miles on it. I have replaced the alternator, water pump, plugs, distributor, cap, rotor, and computer. Mines been a great ZJ to me, and i have thought about sellin it a couple times, but it always seems to find a sweet spot with me and i cant part with it. I got the 4.0, and it goes through about 2 quarts of oil per oil change. I know its not long for the world though, as the head is cracked and leaks some oil outta it now. Still has the power to pull 70+ when needed.
