I got in my ZJ today at the store and pulled out of the parking lot and noticed it was really hot in there. Turns out the AC wasnt blowing cold air and I noticed the check engine light was on. So I stopped, turned the truck off, turned it back on and voila! AC again. It's never done this before and I haven't had it happen since. It this a sign of a worse problem to come? Or was my jeep just pissed at having to drive in this ridiculous heat?

A/C clutch maybe? I ended up with a couple extras by accident, if you end up needing one you can have it if you pay shipping :)

What woudl be a good indication the clutch is going? My AC runs but kinda whines at me that I can feel, also when I increase the RPM's the whine gets worse, its the type of whine you can feel. I know its teh AC cause if I shut it off, the whining stops immediately I am wondering if its teh ac compressor or if maybe my belt is just shot and sliping when the extra stress is put on it? Any idea's?

Just recently mine started acting up too. I was driving for about 45 min in 90 degree weather and all of a sudden it stopped blowing out of the floor and main ducts. It would only come out of the defrost vents below the windsheild. I turned it off and started the jeep up the next mourninhg and it was okand have not had a problem since then.

ANy ideas, or was the jeep pissed or something?

I had the exact same thing happen on my trip a few days ago. It stopped blowing out of the vents and started on the defrost vent. Isn't there a sensor on the AC controls or something like that? I thought maybe that might have been the problem b/c since it was still blowing out of the top vents it couldn't be the blower... :crazy

A/C Stopping

I had this happen also. It only happened when the selector wasn't on the coldest setting. I thought that it hit a thermostat that said it was cold enough and was just blowing a little to maintain the temp (wouldn't that be a nice feature).

Is this what happened?

Don't know why you'd have no AC one cycle and then have it come back the next.

If the air diverts from the face vents to the defrost there's a vacuum leak somewhere in the actuator circuit. Engine vacuum activates various diaphragms that move baffles to switch things around. Look for leaks or a bad check valve under the hood (if you're lucky) or behind the dash.

In some vehicles the computer senses a low vacuum condition and for safty reasons switches the system to defrost so you can see where you are going. According to my dealer.. .. Don S..

OK, I may sound like a newbie but oh well... Where are these things you say to check? Any help would be appreciated..

A/C

Jeez, my Jeep did the same thing. I had it for 3 years now and this is the first year this has ever happened. It'll be blowing cold air and then all of a sudden nothing. I turn the vent selector switch off and back on again and it works fine. The funny thing is, it'll work just fine on heat, but not when on cool....weird :spank:

ac problemo

i have the same problem sometimes with my GC it switches from my face vents to defrost. It happens when going up an incline and in cruise control. I think it has to be some kind of vacum leak. the other thing that i have had happen is the ac will stop blowing cold air and start blowing hot air. I have found out that the cutoff switch on the evaporator canister gets dirty(the contact) or starts going bad and it will cause it to turn on and off sometimes or if the charge is low it will do that also. the noise can be caused by the serpentine belt not being properly tensioned or being to old and if you haven't changed it in a while it is probably the belt. start with belt and cutoff switch. they are easy to check.

There is a TSB on the condition of the a/c switching to defrost vents...let me know if you need a link. It involves installing a check valve in the vacuum line going to the controls.

Please post that link, Thanks
