I'm looking for a good CB radio and was wondering which affordable one you guys recommend. I was told to spend the bulk of my budget on the antenna cause it makes the most difference.. Also can anyone post some pics of where you decided to mount it. Thanks

Roof

I have a roofrack and decided to mount a mirror clamp on it. It gives high clearance and easy disconnect for city driving. I got a 4' whip antenna for it...and it doesn't matter much about the antenna...it's the tuning of it. Uniden is better than cobra in my opinion (they've just done everything with radio already. I have the cobra nightwatch and it's a nice piece.

Thanks for the response..... (note sarcasm) I need some pics of where you guys mount your cb antennas, what brand and mounting hardware you found to be best, PICTURES PLEASE

Have you seen pictures on this forum before?

The main page has a pictures link. Check out "short stack" on the my rig page. AND IF THAT DOESN'T GIVE SATISFACTION...HERE'S A [smilie=censored.gif]ING CLOSE UP OF MINE.

Jesse I appreciate YOUR help I didnt mean for you to think my sarcasm was directed at you. I am currently looking for a used roof rack... so for now I think I may mount in the dead center of my hood area at the base of the windshield ( saw someone else do this and it looked good and worked awesome.

haha

ok, thanks. I was thinking "wtf" this guy is picky...lol.

Here are some pics of my antenna and cb install. the antenna is a firestik mounted inside the rear hatch lip, i had to weld it on because i didn't want to drill any holes, sorry about the pic being so far away of the antenna mount, i will try and take a closer pic later. the cb itself is just a cheap midland cb i got off ebay for $25, i use it all the time talking to truckers around where I live and i get great range out of it. I mounted it in the roof console, i had to take out the singlasses and the garage door opener holder. then i put the cb mount up in the hole that was left over, and then ran the wires above the headliner and down the pillar right next to the driver seat and then used the power for the seat motor to power the cb, i don't get any noise in the cb when i move the seat and everything works great. one thing to note though, my cb is not very big, so if you get a cobra or something the same size it might not fit up in the hole cut out of the ceiling.

Yeah I don't have any pics but I'll get some this weekend for you. I'm on my radio all of the time, so my setup is pretty much set in stone, but doesn't get in the way at all. I'm running a Cobra 200GTL DX Radio with a Predator 10k Antenna, along with a 102" SS Whip for off road/woods driving. I mounted my CB overhead pretty much right above the rear view mirror. My antenna, right now is mounted with a tri mag mount, that was if I do need to remove it, I can easily pop it off with no harm, though this weekend I'm mounting it with a steel beam drilled into my luggage rack. Like I said, I'll get some pics up this weekend for you.

uniden and cobra are very good brands. the most important thing you can do is TUNE YOUR ANTENNA. this is VERY IMPORTANT. this will have one of the biggest influences on your transmitting strength and receiving.

hey guys I got my setup well actually my mother in law bought it for me (how cool is that I'm gonna work on a locker next) anyway she bought me a firestick 5' and a cobra 75wx

Anyway I have it mostly installed but I ned to know how to attach the coaxial cable to the antenna, the mount ball that I got came with some nuts like I need to cut one end of the cable and splice it on... does this sound normal or should there be some other conector? I will post picks as soon as its all done

some you have to splice, some you don't, just make sure after you connect it to test for shorts in it. there should have been a chart that came with the mount to show you how to check for shorts with a voltmeter. don't use your radio until you make sure there are no shorts.

Firestick recomends at least 18 foot of coax to run with their antennas, so get 18 foot of coax...you'll be better off. Also, TUNE the antenna to the vehicle...yes they are pre tuned...on the bench, not for your vehicle. Also they recommend RG-58. And don't roll it in coils...you'll get an RF Choke. Most of this info I think can be found at www.firestick.com under the FAQ section. Also make sure to check the SWR if you ever change the location. Don't settle for poor performance because it looks "good." If your SWRs are too high, you can damage the radio.
