I have a 95 JGC w/5.2 thats overheating at idle. I've installed a new radiator, cap, fan clutch, 180 degree thermostat, hoses, and remanufactured water pump. I'm currently not using a fan shroud (broke mine) but I'm picking up one tomorrow. At idle the temp guage slowly climbs to about 230? until the cap starts hissing and the coolant starts boiling in the coolant resevoir. I can push down on the cap and it will stop. I've run out of ideas.

OK- I put the new fan shroud on and also found (I hate to admit this) that when I replaced the radiator a couple of months ago I put the fan blades back on backwards. Corrected that and started it up and let it idle for about twenty minutes with the outside temp @ 83 degrees. Twenty minutes is a way longer than its been able to idle before with the temps in the 80's. The temp guage slowly crept to 210 and seemed to be holding so I turned the air on. The temp guage then slowly rose to the first increment past the 210 mark and then I saw water spraying on the windshield. Opened the hood and the part of the coolant bottle where the sensor is was spraying water out (the water was boiling in the coolant bottle). I guess I need a new coolant resevoir bottle. So the problem is not solved but it is a LOT better. I still don't know why the coolant would be boiling in the coolant resevoir when the temp guage is only on the first increment past the 210 mark. That's a long ways from being in the red. BTW, am I the only idiot who can't read the temp guage?
 
If the cap isn't sealing correctly, it will blow it into the bottle without overheating being the cause.
When you had the system apart, did you get all the air out before capping it?
Water doesn't boil in the bottle rather being pushed into it.
 
you are use atifreeze and water mixed at 50/50 aren't you?
if you are just using plain water it very well could be boiling after it comes out of the cap at slightly more than 210, water boils at 212.

If the cap is on and functional, it shouldn't be boiling until around the 240 mark water or not.

On my 95 W/5.2 the coolant bottle is not pressurised, if water gets in that bottle that is above 212 it will be boiling.
now if water is boiling in the pressurised radiator that is a different story.

I agree, it will boil once it's depressurized.
If the coolant is already being dumped into the bottle at that low of an engine temp, then the cap probably isn't sealing.
Bad or incorrect cap.
