shifting gears

i have a 96 zj. whenever the car is first started, it wont shift into 4th (i believe) gear, or whatever gear around 35-40mph, i hadnt really counted in my head. i have to give it extra gas and really rev it up to get it to change.

however this only happens when i first start up. if i say get to a red light, and then get to 40mph again after that, it shifts fine for the rest of the ride. got any ideas? bad connection? plugs? i dont really know, hopefully someone has some ideas. thanks in advance.

happen when it's cold? OD doesn't activate for a while to help warm up the tranny

Mine done that when I first bought it. Seems like there was a tsb on that problem. Ended up the warranty took care if it. Was a problem some piston seal in the trans.

i'm in NH, its always cold :roll:. i dunno though, cause like i said, when i give it a bit of extra gas, it will shift. its annoying to be going 40mph at 3000+ rpm.

i was actually planning on replacing the sparks before this started to happen, anyone think this might help?

I use some stuff called dyno surge in my trans..... its like prolong.... anyhow it works wonders sometimes.

If it hasn't had a fluid, filter change and band adjustment over the last 10 years I'd start there.
Couldn't hurt.
