About a month ago I started having problems with my oil pressure. When I would come to a complete stop after driving for a while, the oil pressure would drop to zero. As soon as I started moving again it would return to proper operating pressure. But when the pressure dropped I could notice no knocking or abnormal sounds coming from the engine. I replaced the oil pressure switch and changed the oil and did not have any problems at all out of it for about 3 weeks. Then a few days ago it started doing it again, this time only after I had been driving on the highway for a while and then stopped. Any Ideas what this could be? I thought it might be the oil pump, but when your oil pump goes out, it doesn't work at all anymore right? I am not leaking oil anywhere that I can tell, so I don't think I'm losing pressure that way and I have checked the oil regularly and I am not burning oil either.

I replaced the sending unit with a new one from the dealer.(HINT: Don't use autozone or advance's part. The wiring harness conector only has 1 pin instead of 2. I didn't notice until I already installed it. Unfortunately the dealer's is twice the price.) After installing a new one it worked perfectly until a few days ago. Could there be something making the sender go bad? Should I just say screw it and install an aftermarket oil pressure guage and sensor? :?

oil pressure

This is a loooong shot, but. I remember about that time period(96) there was a bulletin concerning the OPS connectors being wired backwards. For whatever reason, the affected vehicles would be fine for a long time, then start having weird pressure readings. ask the dealer where you got the sender to check their TSB's and see if this applys. As I said, loooong shot. Good luck.

I had to replace my sending unit after I broke it trying to remove the oil filter. Anyway, I got one from autozone and it worked perfectly. I would try running some motor flush through it. You may have some gunk floating around that sometimes block the sender. I'd do this then replace sender.
