At GSW I saw quite a few guys with long arm setups. The benifits are clear, but I'm checking out the availability. Rockkrawler makes a kit. Clayton makes a kit. Other people have made their own custom kits. Is what I've said above the only way to get long arms? Are there any other options out there? And yes, being a cheap bastion, price is very important. Any input is welcome though.

Other than RK and Clayton some off-road shops will build you a custom kit, however, it will set you back a good bit. Rocky mountain high 4x4 has a pretty good rep for this and they are they guys who did the TrailReady ZJ. Also, I talked to one of the guys at Rubicon Express and I got him to at least admit that they were playing around with a long arm ZJ setup. However, it is like 8 months away and still in development.

Personally, I feel a little frustrated at the lack of good documentation on this subject. The hard part about going long arm is all the R&D time people put into their custom stuff. It isn't really that hard to fab up the stuff once the design is there. It just takes a lot of time to figure out how to build the suspension. I wish at least ONE person who has built one of these things would just place his/her CAD stuff here and let people like myself start playing with it - adjusting - fabricating - and learning!

I am sure this has been posted before, but I will ask again. Could someone post the contact info for Rockcrawler and Clayton?

Thats pretty much it. My only concerns with releasing CAD work I have done is that its largely incomplete and I have made a number of running modifications. I don't want to have a set of "plans" rolling around that are inaccurate and could cause someone to take them as the gospel truth. If you really want to build your own long arms, there's a lot of things that you need to understand about your particular setup, since there's nobody to go to but yourself when things go wrong.
That said, I am more than happy to help anyone with particular problems, feel free to e-mail me
Also, It was great wheeling with you in Moab, you missed a cool small sunday run of Hell's revenge!

Rock Crawler 8 inch lift

I have the 8 inch lift and love it and the arms are very strong. I have slide across a few rocks with them without any problems. It was a great kit to Install and the directions are CRYSTAL CLEAR.

Tim,

I understand where you are coming from with the CAD stuff. I really don't want to see people get hurt. However, I really feel that all knowledge in general should be open and available. What you do with it is your own damn problem! I feel this way mostly because of my computer background. See http://www.gnu.org/gnu/thegnuproject.html -- a quick little background on the history of open source software.

Thanks,
Ty :D :D

Ty,

FWIW, I didn't commit any design work to paper. I simply took some measurements and then went to it. This long arm stuff isn't rocket science - especially once a few people have developed systems that are working...

Like Tim, I'd be happy to answer any questions about (my) setup you have.

How is the ride? Soft? My WJ has the skyjacker springs, and the ride is quite soft.

The ride is good its not to soft like stock but not firm like a truck.I am really happy with the ride

I had been considering the RockKrawler kit but they would never send me any pictures of the hardware. They told me they would have the pics on their website over the weekend. Nothing ever appeared. I emailed them Monday and said I was ready to order but I want to see pics, before I spend $1800. They did not answer until yesterday and even then it was just an email saying they were no longer going to communicate via email because it was too complicated. That scared me away. If AOL email is too complicated for them, I don't really want a lift designed by them!

How many pics you want?

I'm locked into the Claytons kit now. Already ordered everything, but I'd still like to see some pics of the suspension if you have any. They dont even have any shots of the arms at all.

I wish I had known you had it a few days ago. How do you like it so far? Did you have the Teraflex s4w before or did you go straight to longarms?

Actually i bought the jeep 3 weeks ago just to make a crawler out of it so i went from the showroom to the long arm and im a cad drafter so i took the two big kits and ordered the rockcrawler kit drafted it in Pro-E and analized it the best i could and seem to really work great so than i chose to install it and not send it back and try clayton......and i will email you some pics and i dont care what people say about RK they are not excepting emails because aol has been screwing up Jermeys email at RK and he hasnt gottin alot of the mail so he chose to use the telephone instead cause people were mad becuase he wouldnt respond to email but it wasnt him it was aol pilling it up in there server.... But i will send you some suspension pics. Laterz Jay

Thanks, Jay, I would appreciate it. I would still like to see the pics.

I guess the thing that bugged me about it they KNEW I wanted to see pictures. I talked to them on the phone and they said they would have them on the website, but they never did. I didn't call them again because they can't show me pics over the phone.

Rock Crawler 8 inch lift Pics

Here are some pics of my jeep and the 8 inch kit i just took some quick backyard photos dropes into a 3.5 foot deep drainage with the discos connected cause i was to lazy to d/c. But even connected all tires stayed in contact with the ground.......and the 35's tuck fine in the rear no triming and fine in front with only front trimming if you legthen the arms to the max. Im working on designing a longer front arm to go 10 inches but not sure if i want to finish it cause it will be to tall. The only problem i found with the RK kit was that the d/c are noisyand they should have made a drop pitman arm for less bump steer. But to get ride of the little bumpsteer i had i got a TERAFLEX drop pitman arm and a new steering stabalizer and it drives better than new now...laterz Jay

Tim, what CAD program do you recommend? I'm not going to have longarms for at least a year, but when I do go that route my friend and I will be fabbing them on our own.

May as well start playing with the CAD stuff now :)

I would as a starter use SolidWorks its way better than autocad but not as complicated as Pro-E. And you can put it in motion after you designe your parts to see how they will work...I do design for a world know disc brake co. There are 3 pics in there with the 10 inches under it with my arms but man it was tall so for now im going to stick with the 8 because its all go not show...LOL
