Default JK Bumper on a ZJ...

Hey alls...

So I'm building a ZJ that I got on trade for a local gambler 500 event. Got it up and running for next to nothing... swapped in a D44A to replace the blown 35 (got it cheap with low miles.. right gears.. and limited slip that functions.. plus its much stronger than the 35).

Lifted it 3" scrounging parts and stuffed some cheap 33 x 12.50s under it.

Next up was a place to mount a winch. Even "cheap" winch mounts for the ZJ are 0ver $250. I decided to find the cheapest full width winch bumper that I could find and make it work. It just so happened to be for a JK.

I took some measurements and the bumper I chose was almost the exact width of the nose of the ZJ. Decided to go for it.. $155 shipped. A few days later.. it was on my porch and I had the plastics ripped off the ZJ (which by the way.. those plastic trim panels can hide all sorts of nasties.. like soft ball size rust holes in the rockers that were not visible anywhere until removing them)

Anyways... did some cutting on the stock sheetmetal bumper and sleeved the unibody rails with some 2x4 1/4" wall tubing (free cut-offs from local machine shop)...

Hmmm.. well I've got a bunch of pictures to post but I cant due to post count. I'll come back to this when I get the count high enough I guess.

Hey I can post pics now... so here we go.

Stitched the sleeves to the frame horns.

Rear winch mount bolts reinforced using 1.5 x 1.5 x 1/4 angle welded to the frame sleeves.

Final fitment with winch mounted...

Overall, I'm happy with how it turned out for it's purpose. I've got some sheet metal work to do... but anyways. It fits. Still going to plug weld the sleeves into the unibody and add some sandwich bolts where the factory tow hooks were bolted in. Will be plenty strong.

Have new tie rods and a contactor upgrade on the way for the ol' M8000. It'll be ready to hit the trails soon.
