So yours came stock with a 42RE. If your 96 came from a 4.0, then should also be a 42RE, but unfortunately I do not know compatibility.

You do seem to be on the right track. 6" XJ springs will probably net you close to 4.5-5" in the front. As for the WJ arm length, I do not know.

I have heard people removing the front driveshaft from a 249 and being fine, I have heard other people removing it and burning up the 249. If it were me, I would keep it slow and risk a 45 mile trip...
