Alright, I'm starting this in response to a comment made by wjjeepthing. He wanted to see some discussions on GPS, and I will admit I'm interested in it too.

I'm a complete newb when it comes to GPS, and computers too. I'd like to see what other people are running, and what suggestions they may have.

Personally, I'd like to have something not built right into the dash, so I can use it away from my Jeep also, but of course something with a nice shape and mount for the dash when it is in the Jeep.(I'm not asking for much am I?)

More importantly would be the features. Background maps would be kill, with plotting capabilities for trails and such not listed on the background maps. Ability to interface with PC or laptop for addition memory and bought maps would be an intrest for me also.

I look at these units from time to time, but there is so much out there it gets overwhelming. I'm throwing this out there for the guys that know about GPS, use it, and actually enjoy comparing different models and features (it turns my brain into a fist).

So what do guys think, what do you run? I know just like any newb I want it all, but don't want to pay for it all. What is a good setup for trails, fishing, possible snowmobiling etc? Start small, upgrade later?

To start it off, something like this seems cool, and pretty adaptable.

I have the Garmin Nuvi 350. I like it, but I haven't used it on the trail.

IMO I think Garmin is one of the best! It will see and show a road majority of the time even if it has no name or Garmin doesn't know the name

The wife has a Garmin Street Pilot. Great unit.

As for off road GPS devices...anybody ever use them for mapping trails or anything like that? Geocache? Or just finding your way back home...

I'm quite interested, but like you guys so far...not sure where to start...

I also have a Garmin Nuvi. It works great on the road and even helps ya find the nearest watering hole. Near as I can tell (so far) its not capable of saving waypoints or plotting tracks and thus not so useful for off-road.

I have the cobra Nav One 4500 and it works great. I believe you can record off road trails with it too.

I work in an electronics retailer and sell these things all the time. In my experience the Garmins are the best units. They are the most reliable, best looking maps, easiest to use, the screen doesn't washout like the TomToms, no software bugs, most accurate maps (Navteq, think Google maps) and most upgradeable.

If you are going to use it on the trail and the road I would recommend going with the Garmin Nuvi 260W, you get the preloaded map of the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Alska, and Hawaii; so for the trails all you would need to do is go to Garmins website and order thepreloaded SD card and pop it inot the unit. The 260W has text-to-speech so it WILL say the name of the street you are to turn on (The Nuvi 200W does not say the name of the street), it has an SD card slot, and all of the Garmin benefits.

If you want to preplan a route you will need to move up to the 600 series, or the 700 series, but in my opinion the 260W and the 200W will get the job done just fine.

The TomToms are harder to use, the maps don't look as good, TomTom uses Teleatlas (think Map Quest) for their maps, known glitches, and not all of the units use the WAAS technology (3 feet of accuracy). The menu system is ridiculus to go through, way way way too many options to know what is going on and no way to back out of the menus.

So, there was my essay on GPS's...hope you liked it.

I always thought it would be cool to get the TJ center pod "Jeep" GPS cradle mounted on the dash of the ZJ. Would be snazzy if you could get it to work
