The innovator of the compact sport-utility segment, Jeep® continues to offer unique vehicles to its customers. For 1998, Jeep Grand Cherokee - the benchmark since its introduction in the 1993 model year - remains at the forefront of the segment with the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited.

The Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited combines the sophisticated performance of a more powerful 5.9-liter V-8 engine with additional luxury, smooth handling and legendary Jeep capability. Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited is the fastest, most powerful Jeep vehicle ever, with a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds.

The 5.9-liter V-8 engine produces 245 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 335 foot-pounds of torque at just 2,800 rpm. Also new on the 5.9 Limited is the 46 RE transmission, high strength output shaft on the existing 249 transfer case, electric engine cooling fan and high output 150 amp alternator.

In addition, Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited features a new free-flowing exhaust system that reduces back pressure by nearly 25 percent and contributes to the high-performance capabilities of the vehicle. A three inch chrome-plated exhaust tip finishes off the low-restriction muffler that provides a throaty "performance" sound.

Luxury is reinforced throughout the interior of the 5.9 Limited with unique features such as premium calf's nap grain leather seat inserts, sun roof, spare tire cover with storage, new 180-watt Infinity® audio system amplifier with 10 speakers, 60/40 rear seat with fold-down armrest, rustic Birdseye Maple wood grain trim, leather trimmed door bolsters and armrests, as well as a leather covered console armrest.

Unique 5.9 Limited exterior features include a front grille with mesh insert, hood louvers, body colored sill molding, P225/70R16 Wrangler HP tires, chrome badging, 16" Ultra Star aluminum wheels and sleek roof rack. The 5.9 Limited's three exterior colors are Bright Platinum, Stone White, and new for Jeep, Deep Slate.

New on all 1998 Grand Cherokees are Wrangler HP VSB tires, new ignition key lock for added security and new Dark Saddle and Agate interior colors. Also available for 1998 is the more sporty looking Grand Cherokee TSi package which was introduced mid-year in 1997. Additionally, all Grand Cherokee models feature improved steering responsiveness due to a revised torsion bar in the power assistance system.

In addition to the 5.9-liter V-8 engine offered only on the 5.9 Limited model, engine choices for the Grand Cherokee are the 4.0-liter, 185 hp I-6 that produces 220 foot-pounds of torque at 2400 rpm or an optional 5.2-liter, 220 hp V-8 that produces 300 foot pounds of torque at 2800 rpm.

Grand Cherokees are available with Select-Trac®, full-time 4WD; Quadra-Trac®, all-time 4WD; or 2WD. Unique to Jeep, Quadra-Trac is capable of providing any ratio of power "on-demand" - from zero to 100 percent - to the front and rear axles.

The Quadra-Trac system delivers 100 percent of power to the rear axle, under normal operating conditions on dry pavement. When driving conditions change or the terrain gets tough, Quadra-Trac instantly delivers appropriate torque to the front and rear axles to provide maximum traction. The result is true on-demand capability for all driving situations.

Proven Quadra-Coil suspension and "deflected disc" shock absorbers enhance Grand Cherokee's ride quality under all road conditions. The high torsional rigidity of the unibody structure of Grand Cherokee is another key to the superb ride and secure road manners.

The Grand Cherokee line for 1998 includes the Laredo, TSi, Limited and 5.9 Limited. The Orvis® edition is no longer available.

Jeep Grand Cherokee is sold worldwide and is assembled in Detroit; Graz, Austria; and Chrysler Corporation's new plant in Cordoba, Argentina. Export versions are available in left- and right-hand drive and with an available 2.5 turbo-diesel engine.
