Default Transfercase (249 to 242)

Hello,

Do anyone know if the transfercase out of a 1995-1996 xj will fit in a ZJ 1997? As I've understood it a case from an XJ 1997-2001 will fit (the ones wit the short "tailhouse").
So my question will be if the TC from a 1995-1996 XJ (the ones with the long "tailhouse") will work to? If so, will the electric part also work (the on for the speed and the shift indicator)?

I know that I might need to change the input shaft and as I' understood it I can reuse the old shiftlinkage from my 249, ok?

Sorry for my English, only read English in school (Sweden).

The car is a 1997 Jeep grand cherokee limited 4,0 automatic.

i'd stick with the 97 to 01- guaranteed fit.

there are the 2 styles of output shaft. the 249 has the long housing with grease seal(conventional style) and the 242 has the shaft with a dust boot on it and short housing. you can run the 249's rear driveline on the 242- just zip tie the dust boot on.

input and output splines should be the same between the 242 and 249. it's the 231 that are different. you will need the shift linkage for the 242 as the 249's are different length and throw. the shift indicator would take a bcm flash as that's programmed for vehicle. or just get the bezel from the 242's donor vehicle and forget the VIC.

hope this all makes sense and helps.

Basically what he said regarding the 242 except I was able to make the 249 linkage work (you still need the shift tab that comes on the 242).

And BTW, your written English is better than most that were born and raised over here!

Thanks for your fast replies,

Then I go for the 97-01 TC. I think I will order the linkage aswell, what parts more precise? The shifter sticking out of the TC of course. Do I need the handle sticking up inside the Jeep or can I use the old one? Do I need the rod(s) connecting the handle to the shifter on the TC?

Can I reuse the old yoke for the rear output?

Thanks
