Default Oil leak...tranny or t-case?

I've been seeing oil spots on the back of my 95 ZJ for a while, whenever we would hit the road (75+ miles) I've been trying to track this down for a long time, and have hit upon several different issues. The first was a loose/leaking tranny cooler line (fixed, drove home no problems). Yesterday in Sandusky, I found the PCV vac. line had come off, and it was blowing oil out of my PCV filter. Fixed it and drove home with no issues...but found new oil spots on the back of the jeep again.

I have found a bunch of transmission oil on the body around the t-case, and it seems to be coming from the flange where the t-case bolts to the transmission. Did I miss a gasket when I swapped over to the 242, or do I have a leaking transmission or t-case?

*edit*

There is no gasket but there is a seal on the transmission side.

There is a weep hole there so you can tell when the seals are bad. If you have a new seal on the t-case, then the tranny seal is probably going out. If you don't mind watching your fluid level and adding now and then, you could probably wait a little while to change it if needed, but it will get worse.

you did replace the tailshaft seal on the tranny when you swapped cases right?

if not, you might just get a quote from a reputable shop. i kinda tweaked mine while trying to seat it straight in there. threw it together anyway and no leaks so far, crossing fingers...

I did not. Just pulled the old, broken 249 tcase and stuck up the "new" 242 (35k miles). Changed fluid in the new t-case, and went on down the road.

I didn't think I would need to change anything in the tailshaft assembly, as the spline count matched between the two cases, and they bolted right up...
