Default 99 WJ Laredo Gas Tank Skid???

Hey all, havn't been on here in a loooooooong time, but I now need your help to either make me feel "smart" or make the mechanic look smarter LOL

I brought my GF's WJ in for its mvi (which was one month overdue). All was good but one thing. What I thought was only a skid plate is apparently what holds the gas tank in place?????

I always thought it was plain and simple...that steal sheet was a gas tank skid. Well it now has a hole about the size of my hand and I'm being told that this is what holds the tank in place. Is this true or not?

If it is in fact what holds the tank in place.....dang.....poor design IMO LOL

Anybody having any info on this would be great...

Thanks,

D

post pictures...the thing that goes under the gas tank is both a "skid" and what holds the tank up...i think there was an option on the WJs for a gas tank skid (something more then the flimsy metal that is on the one i have at least) and either way it alwasy holds the gas tank up..but post pics on where the hole is cause either you got some seriouse rust going on or you got really lucky and tore the skid and not the tank

I'll try to get a pic....my better half uses the Jeep.

It's without a doubt some rust on that "skid"....I'm just amazed that the tank itself is not held by straps like the ZJ's.....poor design imo

I've tried a few local salvage yards around my area and even called a dealer....ahhhh nope LOL

So I'm looking at perhaps getting a plate welded to whats remaining on the "skid" and NOT rusted LOL

I also contacted a ebay seller who has a trailer hitch which supposedly includes that plate.....hummmmm

Thanks!

Thanks!

There are 2 different skids for the gas tank. If the Jeep has skid plate package (front skid, t-case skid, etc..), then you have the thicker gas tank skid. Otherwise, they are a lot thinner and can get bent easily.

You should be able to find the thicker one in a junkyard somewhere.
