Default 8.8 Ford Differential

I'm looking at a modified ZJ with an 8.8 Ford rear end with an electric locker. How does it compare to the Dana 35, Dana 44a, and Dana 44? I've read of people converting to it, but haven't asked why, but now need to know.

Thanks, Doug

ok forget the 35, and 44a, 44a is nice but has no aftermarket support, the real 44 is great, great support and strength, and the 8.8 is a good strong axle, great aftermarket support rear disc brakes, granted you have the right year axle , but hey id trade you my 44a anyday

teh 8.8 is stronger than the 44. The only knock on it is that it's c-clipped.

C-clipped, true, but there are C-clip eliminator kits. And at 31 spline axles, i'm sure you are gonna be wheeling the piss out of it long before you break one to worry about the C-clip equation ruining your day.

Yes they make eliminator kits BUT!!! the kits were not designed for constant up and down movement of the axle like in wheeling. I've thought about swapping my BUILT 8.8 out of my 90 GT Mustang, but when it was my DD I had to reseal my eliminators 3 times in 1 year! The eliminators are primarily designed for drag applications per NHRA rules. This does not stress the kit anywhere near like using in offroad applications because of axle movement!!! hope this helps!

why is the c-clip so bad? i think the 8.8 is a great axle. specially hte fullsize 31 spline version. only weak link in it is the carrier. ran one in my ford with 38s, locked and 4:56s and BEAT on it. nothing ever gave. the shafts are thicker than a D60........ i think its one of the best, underrated axles out there...........

And BTW I'm not downing the axles or anything. I'm actually selling/trade for stock plus cash, and build another 8.8 with 33 spline axles, c-clip elims, and a full spool for my mustang!

because some people do break axles and the only thing holding the tire/axle/wheel on if you break an axle is the caliper...unless you have drums then nothing.

I ran one in my old ZJ. I think 35's or so are perfect for an 8.8 and you wouldn't have to worry about it. Once you go much bigger than that, if you are really hard on things you'll start twisting and/or breaking stock 31 spline stuff.
