Default so my headlights dont work

ok so here is a odd problem that i am not having

so last night i come out of work i fire up the old ***** and flick on the old lights and nothing, so at this point i am like WTF i check all the fuses, and there good i hit the brakes and the break lights come on, then the 4ways and there good so i was like i will try the high beams i pull them once and they slip out of my hands and so i pull them again and hold them on all my lights come on and i can even flick them on and off with the regular light switch but only as long as i hold down the high beam switch as soon as i let go there off, and to get them to come back on i have to pull them not once but twice, so i guess what i am asking is has anyone else had this problem or am i just the only unlucky one, and what could it possibly be? would it be the the actual switch in the dash, the highbeam switch or the module in the dash.

thanks in advance and i hope you can read my ramblings cause i could really use the help

do your overnight/parking lights come on when you turn the switch? If they do then I would say the problem might be in your wiring probably close to your headlights. If they don't then I would say it would be in your switch. Just go through and check all of your connections and connectors. If your overnight/parking lights do come on regular, I would say you probably have a break in the low beam's hot/positive wire. Both your high beams and low beams will work off of the same ground(-) but they have seperate positive wires. One way to check this(not a definite answer) is to turn your switch on and wiggle the wires to both headlights this will let you know if you have a short, unless the wire is completely broken. Good luck with it, wiring problems can be hard to find. If you have the Haynes repair manual that would help right about now(or atleast one that has wiring diagrams).

but what about the dash lights, they dont come on either, (sorry i forgot to add that) and as long as i pull on the high beams and hold them everything works normal

the wireing going to the high beam switch is all good tomorrow i will go over it, i need to find someone with a grand that has headlights that work around here and try my switch in it

Yeah, that is odd... I would check the switch, I mean the lever for the high beams act as switch as well so that switch is working and the normal switch isn't. Did you say if your running lights work(rear w/o brakes depressed, and front w/o signals flashing)? If they don't, with what you just told me, I would say its def. in your switch.

yeah... I had cheap lights in for a little while and they melted the connectors under the hood. I have to pop it open every once in awhile and jiggle the wires before my lights come on. Try that. You might have the same thing that happened to me.

see thats thet thing tho, the normal headlight switch works as long as i am holding down the high beam switch (that is what i have to hit twice to get them to come one) and sorry i should have said this before but it is all of my lights not just the headlights,

i was thinking the relay in the dash
tomorrow i am going to the dealer i bought it from cause he has a 98 on the lot and see if he will let me try my highbeam switch in that and see if that is the problem
