HI
Although this technically isn't a tech question, I figured I'll ask over here as the JU IQ is watered down by too many 14 year olds. I'm looking into buying a modded Jeep in Canada and bringing it home to Illinois. It wil be needed to be titled for street use here, it is a street vehicle there, but it has had an engine/tranny swap from a newer vehicle than the original man date of the Jeep itself. I was wondering if anyone else has had any pratical experience with doing this- actually going thru the process of xferring it to the US and going thru any inspections necessary to make it registerable here. The few replies I got on JU were " It'll need sear belts or and or passive restrains" ( no kidding) and " Don't buy a modded Jeep- It'll be beat up- mod one yourself" (and why would I do that if I can get one w the work done that I'd like to do, in good condition AND at a great price AND not waste a year or so of my life doing the work- DUMBA**ES) Anyone here done this? I dont wnat to sound like a dumbass but you should check too see if there are any differences in Emission standards from Canada to the States. That one could turn into a major issue.

John-
Not sure if this will be an issue or not, but seeing as you're trying to get a vehicle from outside the country registered in IL, they'll probably give you all sorts of **** about it. So, just some info that might help from my IL Police Dept. Offense Code Book: Maximum frame heights: Frame height is measured from unladen on a level surface to the lowest point on the manufacturer's original frame between the front and second axle. GVWR of less than 4500 lbs- 24 inches GVWR of 4501-7500 lbs - 26 inches Maximum bumper heights: Bumper height is determined by weight category of gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) measured from a level surface to the highest point of the bottom of the bumper when the vehicle is unloaded and the tires are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressure. GVWR 4500 lbs and under - 24 inches front, 26 inches rear GVWR 4501-7500 lbs - 27 inches front, 29 inches rear Also, there's a ton of stuff listed in this book under miscellaneous requirements, but i'm not sure what would be enforced. Most of these things are NOT enforced by local or state police, but the story might be different if you are trying to get it inspected for registration. Some that might be of interest to you that are listed among these things, yet with no further description, are: 12-502: Mirrors 12-503(d): No windshield cleaning device 12-601: Defective horn 12-603: No seat belts 12-604: Television in motor vehicle 12-605: No bulletproof shield in taxicab 12-605.2: Consumption of food and drink on bus 12-607: Vehicle suspension system (no further info given...not sure what it means...probably why it's not enforced!) 12-607.1: Unlawful frame or floor height (listed above) 12-608(a): No bumper 12-608(a): Unlawful bumper height (also listed above) And here's a couple of #'s that *might* be helpful, not sure though. They're listed as: for info about offense code books, Secretary of State Police: (217) 785-5480 Department of Driver Services: (217) 782-7036 not sure if either of those will help, but maybe someone there can steer you in the right direction. good luck, -Ron- |

I own a canadian jeep. I asked them what they had to do to get it legal, and the only thing they said they had to do for the inspection was the Speedo. The main guage was in KM/H.
They left the rest of them metric, and the VIC was all MEtric when I got it. But other than that, there's no difference that they made me aware of. As for the hassles of Importing, I have no idea. The Dealer did all of mine. (: -= Jay =- |
