OK, Here's the short version: Jack one rear wheel up (tranny in park) and crank on the lifted rear wheel and you get a "clack-clack" racheting sound from the 231 T-case as the rear drive shaft turns. Two: accelerate hard from a stop and the ZJ shudders like the something internal is slipping real bad.
I thought my tranny was dying until I jacked the rear wheel up. Anybody had a similar situation?

So 1 wheel is up and the driveshaft is turning??
Sounds like spider gears in the rear end from what your describing.

He's got a trac loc.
Short of pulling the case and taking it apart, who knows. It's pretty easy stuff. Jay |

231's have chains right?
When the chain stretched in my 242, I had a noise similar to what you're describing. Probably just need a replacement chain & a rebuiild kit. |

Chain's my first guess. But that's not consistent with the shuddering at all.

Yeah 231 has a chain. The chain just powers the front axle though.

I'm going to drop the driveshaft and check the splines on it this weekend, right after the demolition derby (no, I'm not using my ZJ!) wish me luck!

What I don't understand is you said you have the tranny in park, you jack up 1 back tire and the driveshaft is spinning... is the t case in neutral? If it's in gear, something is wrong at the t case end.
