Default Swapping NP249

I have a 1994 ZJ 5.2. From what i understand the newer NP249 (after 1996?) has a true locking 4low.
So far im happy with my VC and its working well at 104K miles.

Would I be able to swap in a newer NP249 when mine goes out? Are they the same? Direct bolt on? Are input shafts different?

Don't really want to deal with a 231 or 242 swap. Seems too complicated to me and not worth the hassle if i can get a real 4low lock with a newer 249.

Open to other options.
Thanks

I don't have a definitive answer but think all you may have to change is the input shaft if it is a different length.
The 249 in my 96 ZJ 4.0 has now reached 179K miles and still working fine

If you haven't already checked it out, go here:

Although the discussion is about swapping out the 249, the information in the "Input Shafts and Gear Cuts" section should provide you with the info you need. If the new 249 you want to swap in has the same input it will work. You might have to make some other modifications (shift linkage??, driveshaft??, etc).

The post above will also let you know if you can swap inputs to make the newer 249 work if needed.

Good Luck...
