Automatic Shifter Upgrade

Has anyone installed a Hurst or B&M shifter in there ZJ. I figure one of the models with a boot I can get to fit the console. It's the whole shifter linkage problem with a 42RE. I haven't had any luck with talking to the companies. They act like I am joking! I figure if I am going to build a 300 horse stroker then I should have a tranny and cute shifter to back it up! Thanks!

I'm sure you are going to have to invent one.. Buy a Hurst or B&M and use it as a starting point. Take lots of photos so you can share your experience.

If I am not mistaken, all that shifter is is a cable operated lever... So most of those shifters should bolt right in

Find me a reverse valve body for the 42RE and I'll do a writeup on the shifter ideal :mrgreen:

I know this thread is old, but a guy I went to high school with put a b&m shifter in his xj, it was crappy lookin but it worked non the less. it was more his "craftsmenship" than anything

Depending on the transmission...

B&M offered short throw shifters for both the AX-5 and AX-15 manual trannies found in XJ's. I believe both are long since discontinued.

I drove an XJ with the AX-5 short shifter. It didn't make a huge difference in the distance of the shifts, and almost was foolish looking, knowing that it was a 4-cyl under the hood.

depending on what tranny you have I had a B&M starshifter that I was told will work with the 46rh... Its cable operated so it should work once its "tuned in" I didnt go ahead with it cause it just seemed like too much trouble without any off road benefits

The stock shifter is cable operated, same as the B&M etc for the most part...

I put a B&M Hammer ratchet shifter in mine and the only problems I had were adjusting the linkage just right so that it would fully switch to each gear without binding in park. Pretty much all the trannies in the zjs are the same as dodge versions. And those are all just different versions on the TF727. That is good news because the 727 is the most common transmission chrysler ever made. They are all cable actuated and you just have to figure out whether you are going to pull the center console out all together or modify it to fit. I have seen the Hammer shifter fit in the center console perfectly and it pretty much looked like a super upgraded stock option. Do a search on the net for that ZJ that competed in the Baja this year and you can find pictures of the install. It is wicked. I will post some pictures of my modified console when I finish it, but I am trying to set it up pretty much the same as those guys.

yeah i have a hurst promatic 2 sitting around somewhere i bought it when i was going to work on my 69 camaro but i sold the car and now i need to find that thing
