Hey, On my last wheeling trip I kinda broke off a wheel stud. So, do I have to remove the shaft? If so, what is the best way to save the fluid?

hmmmm. I am not sure, I think you might be able to do it without. I know you can take a broken one out without removing it.

Why save the fluid? I mean it is a whole 5 bucks. If you mean catch the fluid I use a big drain pan.

Out on the trail I use gallon freezer bags. I picked up the tip from Junk Yard Wars and it works great!

I wish the fluid was 5$!!!! It is 20$ a quart and it take 3.5 to fill! With the friction mod it cost me about 80$ to lube the rear. It is a 90W-140syn that only ford makes.

IMO, that is the reason not to use synthetics in the diffs. If you wheel the gear oil needs to be changed once a year at a minimum. After that it seems a cover is being pulled once or twice a year for some other reason. And everytime I look at the gears they are just as purtty as the day we installed them.

Trust me. I dont wanna use syn on teh rear. It is required. Says right on the diff tag. I looked everywhere but everyone said that it is only a Ford make.

Shay, not bad! What do you use in its place?

I have Mobil 1 in there but it is still high dollar at $7 a quart. Just put any old gear lube in there and then add a small bottle of friction modifier from the dealer since you have the factory trac-loc. I would think that regular old 80-90 would work just fine.

when i regeared is just put in regular ol gear oil with friction modifier. that is actually what the shop recommended.
also amsoil makes the same synthectic at almost half the cost of the ford stuff.

Man, I guess I am a loser.

I use the cheap quakerstate stuff. But I guess the fact that I change my dif fluid at a minimum of once a month has something to do with it.

I guess running in axle deep water for miles at a time is not a good thing? LOL.

I buy 90w in the 22 gallon version so I really don't know what it cost's other than they were 2 bucks a quart and I carry four of them in my trail kit.

That expensive **** seems exactly that expensive ****.
