: AEV Selway WJ Rack Replica Finished....
AP WJ 05-09-2002, 10:31 PM No pics yet, sorry. :spin:
I'm going on vacation for a week before graduation but I'll have some up tomorrow afternoon I hope.
The rack came out GREAT. Total cost was a fraction of what AEV sells theirs for. If any of you are considering trying to make one on your own you can get away with a tape measure, welder, cheap hydr pipe bender, sawsall, and angle grinder. A (good) drill press and a chopsaw would have made things a lot easier.
My buddy and I have plans to make a WJ rack that's not so much like they AEV rack and maybe make it available to buy... we'll see how things go. What kind of things would you guys like to see come with a rack?
Anyway, I'm beat so I'm going to check out. Pics'll be up tomorrow!

pa_wj 05-10-2002, 10:00 AM I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that is going to copy their design for my own homemade version. I am planning to fab one up this summer and can't wait to see some pic's of how your's turned out.

Jeepin' Wolf 05-10-2002, 06:56 PM Well, well, that is not bad. Good job on it. At first I thought it was AEV until I noticed that it is flat not curved along the roof line.
One question though. I don't seem to see a roof mount in the middle, is that so. If it is then you may be careful with heavier loads. The nutserts in the roof are not particularly strong and can come loose or rip, another possibility is caving in the roof around the mount areas, again that is with heavier, like 80lb+ load. Every time we extract Anton the winch support is done by the roof rack and his held just fine, with only 2 mounts, thins may not be so. Something to keep in mind.
RJ2kWJ 05-10-2002, 07:41 PM ILL TAKE ONE!!! Lemme know when. Thanks.

Pufferman 05-10-2002, 10:37 PM Will that fit on a ZJ? If not.. make me one... :D

^LMAO^
Nice Job, Adam!!! As I've mentioned before, you do GREAT work! :)
For your piece of mind, you won't have to deal with my foolishness for the time being. Looks like I'm gonna be Adam's camera ***** for GSW. I like the AEV knockoff a lot. I would also suggest putting in the middle supports as it spreads the load a bit more evenly. You never know when you'll need it.

Alaska ZJ 05-11-2002, 11:39 PM Nice rack man, I like it.

Spanky Malone 05-12-2002, 08:14 AM AP WJ -- The rack looks great, but I second Adam's suggestions about the third "foot" in the middle. It will help disperse the loads of 80+ lbs. and might help you contour the rack to the rooflines of the WJ. Otherwise it appears to be well-executed and looks great! My only quirks are the flat side pieces (prefer a full tubular style like the Selway) and the shortness of the rear end. The rack looks quite small, interior space-wise. Any interior measurements? Can you fit a 33" tire up there and any gear? Keep up the good work!
mallcruzier 05-14-2002, 07:40 PM Looks great! I've been wanting to make one of those for my ZJ for the longest time. What kind of tubing did you use and how much did you pay for it? What is a hydr bender?
flyfishboston 05-15-2002, 07:56 AM I want one for my ZJ, please let me know!!! Thanks, mark
XTRMEWJ 05-15-2002, 06:41 PM I am in for a WJ rack. Let me know where and when to send the money and its as good as done, those things look great. I also like the idea of reinforcing it a bit more, but the proto looks great. Any word on what finish will be available??

AP WJ 05-20-2002, 06:38 PM I'm now a college graduate
Thanks for the comments on the rack. I should have mentioned that the pics were taken before we tacked the center supports on and primed the underside of the rack.
As for cargo space measurements, I knew last week but a lot of brain cells were sacrificed in the past 7 days.. I'll call my buddy this week and have him take some measurements.
I got email from a few of you guys and I'll be getting back to you over the next few days. I'm just trying to get settled in my place now and answer mail. And as far as making/selling a rack goes - it might happen, but not anytime soon. My buddy just got a 50hr/week job with the pipe fitters union so time's a bit tight for him. If we do decide to I'll let you guys know.
XTRMEWJ 05-20-2002, 06:48 PM dude, you're killing me here. I need a bigger rack. :D :D
