Does anyone know if a 1993 Cherokee transfer case will fit a 1994 Grand?

Thanks.

What's the case?

It probably will bolt right up. Whether ytou have to swap input gears and/or change rear driveline is another story.

It is either a NP242 or an NP 231, yes they will bolt up. You will have to fiddle with the linkage though and maybe get a new shift benzel

Stupid question...

Where do I look for or how do I find out what transfer case I have on my ZJ?

Same goes for the XJ. It belongs to this guy that doesn't care much about it. I asked him what kind it was and he couldn't tell me. It's still up on this junked XJ. It's been there a couple years.

Thanks!

Easiest way is this:

4wd options case
4H, N, 4L 249 (Quadratrac)
2H, 4PT, N, 4L 231 (Commandtrac)
2H, 4PT, 4FT, N, 4L 242 (Selectrac)

This is for 93-98

I finally found out today... it's a 231. The guy wants $250 for it. What do you think?
I think the VC is going on my 249. From what I've read here it has all the symptoms: clunking sound on tight turns, sometimes it feels like the front end skips a little and it slows down the Jeep while making the noise. Feels like I'm rubbing a tire, but I'm not. I read somewhere that sometimes if I change the transfer case fluid it will take care of it for a while, is this true?

I just remembered... the rear is now skipping a little and making a very faint thumping sound. I checked and it looks like the diff is leaking fluid throught the top of the seal. Could this be just a need for new fluid.

This is what I got so far:
Rear Diffs: Amsoil 75w-140
Front: Amsoil 75w-90
Tranny and TC: Amsoil ATF-4 (yes the old stuff but I got a good price)

Any other suggestions/ideas are appreciated. Don't forget the questions about the TC (231)

Thanks everybody!!

Well, this could be a number of small problems, or it could be nothing but the case going bad. The symptoms you describe do sound like the VC going out - If you want to make absolute sure, pay the dealer an hour's worth of troubleshooting time to have them tell you what's wrong.

Personally, I would swap the case ($250 is OK I guess depending on the miles. I paid $200 for one a few years back with like 25k on it,) and go from there. I say personally simply because the 231 is a better case for going off-road.

Jay... I'm glad you posted so soon, thanks.

I talked to the guy and the TC has over 100k miles. I looked at it's coverd in fluid. It's not dripping but it is covered. I can't tell if it's from the TC itself or if it's from the tranny. The XJ got hit from the back but it was a soft hit. It doesn't look like the rear was pushed in (and the cardan into the TC). What do you think, should I do it? I was looking for a 242 but the only one I found had 90k and it was $500.
Should I try just changing the TC fluid and see if that solves it for now and keep looking for a 242? Or is the 231 as good or better?

Thanks again.

With the 242, you get the addition of a full time 4WD and its a stronger case. You're going to pay more for that.

Speaking for myself again, if the case has 100k on it, was in a wreck, is covered in fluid, and the guy wants $250 for it, I would hold off for a better deal.

I agree. Around here you can buy a np231 for about that same money out of a salvage yard and get a 30-90 day warrantee with a lot less miles on it. Just stay away from front end damage as they crack the case quite often.
