I have a 98 ZJ with a 5.9 and 46re. I have read the threads about trannys going bad. My problem is that my trans worked fine till i went four wheeling. Nothing extreme, just some trails. My OD off light comes on by its self, and stays on. I have noticed that it comes on after a while of driving, after the trans has been in gear for a while. Also a burning smell comes for the tranny. I had it flushed and they said that it also flushes the cooler, but it seems like its overheating. It shifts fine until the light comes on. Then it gets stuck in the gear im in. Anybody have this problem.

i suspect you are having overheating problems because the OD is setup to turn itself off when the tranny reaches a certain temp.

There is a checkvalve in the line going to the cooler in the radiator. If your transmission is starting to go, this valve becomes clogged with debris and stops the flow of trans fluid to the cooler. The trans overheats and the OD light comes on.
