: CV boot ripping....3rd time

so within one year's time, i've ripped my left front cv boot 3 times. and never the right side. it begs the question to be asked if there's something i'm missing here. is there anything that could be causing that left one to constantly rip, and the right one is never touched? i also havent been off roading in about 3 months either when the most recent one occured as i'm gathering parts for more lift.

anyone got any ideas why this would happen? i looked underneath, and there's nothing that is hanging that would cause it to rip. i mean i've replaced it personally every time, so i think i'd have seen something like that one of these times.

i'm open to other suggestions as well. my thoughts were to switch both sides of the axle to u-joints. worth it? and what shafts would i be looking for if i were going to do this (year etc..)? Thanks in advance.

same problem on mine...talked to the dealership and they said something about there not being enough clearance and bad rubbing on tight turns or something....

Yup, it's pretty easy. Here's the article I went off of, http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/axle/weak_link/ it's a few years old so the price is a bit higher now, but i haven't had any problems in the last 40k miles. There are a few other places that make the conversion too.

Awful hefty writeup for something as easy as swapping out axleshafts. Just get some TJ junker ones. Make sure they have the 297 or 560 joints and you'll be fine.

EDIT: And tone rings if you like your ABS

is there any harm in changing over to u-joint shafts one side at a time? not sure i can afford to do both right now, but i need to do the drivers side, and i'd rather spend the money once on u-joint shafts rather than cv now, and then u's when i have money for both.

also, does anyone know specifically which TJ models to ask for the shafts from if i called a junk yard or something? i have ABS, and would like to keep it.

Lol haven't broken my CVs in almost two years... most of that running on 35"s

But yea U-jointed shafts from a TJ or XJ should work

oh and ditch ABS when you do the swap

but i cant ditch it on one side and not the other when i'm replacing it.... so if i were to go that method, i'd have to replace both sides at the same time, correct?

so any shafts from a dana 30 front should work?

you don't have to replace both shafts... and almost any d30 shafts work

well i meant if i ditch ABS? the shafts with ABS have something different on them, so wouldnt it be weird to have one side with ABS and the other without if i replace one at a time?
