Well I was on my way home today going down I-5 from Tacoma. Cruising up a hill with the cruise control on doing about 70 in the left lane passing a couple of cars and then I hear a pop/bang type of noise and the motor is off. I slap it into neutral and coast to the side to stop.

After stopping and getting my head together I try and start again - crank crank but no fire. Can smell fuel though. Pop the hood and take a quick visual for anything obvious. No holes, no leaking fluid from anywhere, nothing 'looks' wrong. Jump back in after a couple and try and start again. Engine cranks, acts a little rough. Crank crank crank and then kind of a weird noise and then crank crank crank again. While cranking the motor it kind of jumps a little but I don't hear any kind of ignition/firing. I was not in a position to try and do anything else so I had to call a tow to get the Jeep home. Now it sits in the driveway waiting for me to get home after work on Monday to play around and see if I can determine what the heck is going on.

Any ideas or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like an ignition coil to me........very common. It can be a bugger to change, athough its in an easy spot. Get out your Torx! At least its cheap!
