OK this is the long story short. I pull into the auto parts store to get oils and stuff for the ZJ and civic and when I pull in this cop man decides to roll in with his lights on. Says he is writing me a ticket because my lift is more than 2" above factory. Says the law only alows 2" above OR below factory height suspensions. I was like there is no way that is possible, there are tons if Jeeps and Fords lifted around here! Not to mention he pulls me over on the same street as 4WD and 4 Wheel Parts where this kind of stuff is installed. So I ask him, so you sometime hang out in front of these places and pull people over, he say yes, WTF. He also tells me how he pulls over slammed hondas. LOL. Anyway he goes I'll write you a warning if you bring it back down. I say go ahead and write the ticket, and when is my court date, because I dont plan on lowering it, its taken 2 years and about $3000 to get it where it is. So he says I guess it would be hard to put it back down. I ask to see the law and what it is, he shows me. Ok I say thanks, now when is that court date..... Anyway, after some chit chat, he says I'll just make it a warning so you dont have to go to court!! Well after some resarch with my buddy Jeepers, the GA law he referenced was for passenger cars, I am not a passenger car I am a light truck as it says on my registration. So I'm betting he relized that and decided he didnt want to go to court either. GA law for trucks says the bottom of frame/chasie cant be more than 27" above the ground, I am well under that. Now I am going to have to carry around a copy of the law with me. Good thing I am moveing to the next town over, I know this guy will continue to give me a hard time. My only problem will be if he decides to challenge my bumper heights, that might be a problem..... Opps, I guess that realy wasnt the long story short, oh well

frickin' wanker. he new he had been outgunned. your knowledge of the force of the lift had exceded his and he knew his number was up. thats why he pulled the count dooku maneuver that he did.

I'm glad he ended up changing his mind... I think you're OK on the bumper though-- I checked at http://www.customtruckshowcase.com/laws/StateLaws.html

GEORGIA

If you modify the OE bumper more than 2 inches above (or below, for that matter) the manufacturer's spec, don't be surprised if you're cited.

From that, I would assume that because you have replaced your OE bumper with the ARB, you are fine.

You're right about the 27" mark- proven by http://www.truckworld.com/How-To-Tech/97-lift-laws/lift-laws.html

As stated by this page, in Georgia, the limit is 27" frame to ground and 22" bumper to ground. I'm not sure whether you meet the 22" requirement. Also note though that this page is from '97 and may be out of date. Does anyone know of a more up to date source about GA lift laws?

what are the measurements with the bumpercover off on a zj and a wj?

an arb will surely be lower than this.

I think it is a good idea for everyone to know what the law is in their state. For example, the last time the cops pulled me over, they measured the height of my rear bumper. The law in MN is that after-market bumpers may not be above a certain height, not OEM... as long as the "frame" has not been lifted more than 6" above stock. so if he had given me a ticket for that, I would have contested it.

However, even though I am higher than legal (by about 2"), the local Police do not give me a hard time. They pull me over just to talk. And look at my Jeep. When they ask me if I know what the law is, I tell them, even if I am over it. They appreciate the honesty, and they also know that I have never had a traffic violation. Being polite, and also driving more cautiously and safely helps. I have actually been told that my Jeep is not quite in compliance, but that since I know the law and appear to be responsible, that they'll let it slide. I have been pulled over about 4 times now. This is also another reason to have an ARB bumper. They are well known, and one police officer told me that he considers them to be OEM.

I hate cops that have nothing better to do than harrass the first thing that comes to view! One of these days I know I'll come to that point... Now I am registered in AL, where the only lift law is that the Tail lights must be less than 60" from the ground. I can't imagine how tall I'd hafta be for that to come into effect. Right now I am living in GA and sure hope that those dicks don't mess with me... I bet the 22" bumper law would get me or pearce good!

Tinted windows. ;)

The hair gets me into trouble in other situations.

He must not own a Jeep... :spank: Then maybe he'd understand.

I never had a problem with any officers in GA, but the ones in VA are terrible about modified vehicles. They say that anything that isn't stock is illegal. I've been warned about upgrading my headlamps, stickers on the windows, clear tag covers, etc. Just stupid stuff. Don't guess I ever lifted enough for the suspension to draw their attention. I'm waiting on the "you can't have spring spacers" comment during my next roadcheck. Lots of my friends have been harassed about bumper/frame heights though.
