Today I smashed the front bumper on my ZJ. I was hitting my favorite trail this morning and I was confronted with a large section of ice. It didn't look too bad, but I misjudged its thickness. After smashing my way through the 2"-4" thick ice I got out to asses the damage. Both sides of the bumper were broken, and needed to be hack-sawed away from the tires. As I stood there looking at my smashed fog lights, the EVAP canister fell to the ground and spilt charcoal pellets on my feet. After cleaning up the mess, plugging the hole where the canister was, and cursing Chrysler for my plastic bumpers, I headed for home. I guess on the plus side, this makes for a good excuse to get a new REAL bumper. The Jeep ran fine for the 20 mile trip home without that stupid canister and it don't think it misses it. Am I going to create any problems driving without this EVAP canister? According to my Haynes manual, I have to remove the entire grill, bumper and headlights to replace it, but I am lazy and don't want to take off the bumper until I have a new one to put on. I am going snowboarding at Loon in NH next weekend and I need to know if I should fix this first, or just leave it for now?

Thanks,
Nick

You will need the canister for an emissions inspection. Not having one will have no impact on driveability. Putting one back on will have no impact on the performance, just the wallet.

You should get a closer look to see if anything else is damaged. Otherwise, I'd use it for the trip. That damage may help you win a parking space battle. :D

Thanks, I just Duct Taped over the hole where the canister was, I don't need an inspection for 2 years :D I replaced the fog lights, and gorilla glued the bumper back together, now she looks as good as new. :D Nothing else got damaged except the cheezy plastic. I must say, that I was definatly impressed with the Jeep, most other vehicals would have been stopped dead, the ice was easily thick enough to walk on.
