Acrophiliac 12-17-2003, 05:30 AM Yes, I will probably make it, always looking for an excuse to return to Minnesota!!
Shickdawg 12-17-2003, 09:05 AM I'm interested, but I don't schedule things for 7 months in advance. I'll keep tabs on this as spring rolls around, and I might be able to more concretely give a "yea" or "nay".

Fred Olmstead 02-07-2004, 10:24 PM I'm interested.
My bro lives in St Paul and we're right now, (Feb), in the process of moving my parents into assisted living there, so it would be a "2 bird" trip for me.
NatePT 02-08-2004, 03:47 PM You already have me in the list kornchild under nattyb (JU name) but i know a buddy of mine will be interested as well but he has an xj, is this a grand event only? Thanks

Sandy R 02-16-2004, 01:00 PM When we started the Grand Slams (Brian Garfield in the east and Tony Curless in the west) it was intended to be an event for Grands only. At GSW we have turned all requests down for non-Grands. The only exception that we've made at GSW is for sponsors-- and they drove Wranglers. Sounds like some of you guys have an interest in bringing buddies that would drive non-Grands. If you allow non-Grands to participate why not just move it to the Trailride section and organize a big trailrun rather than a Grand Slam?
My two cents.
NatePT 02-16-2004, 01:54 PM because its mainly a grand slam but if there are not enough grands to make it a good trip there may need to be some other jeeps. Just my thoughts but it would be pretty cool if it was all zj's and wj's.

ZJipsomatic 02-16-2004, 03:49 PM i say firmly
NAGCA, north american GRAND CHEROKEE assocation
GSW, GRAND slam west
GSE, GRAND slam east
the list goes on,
personally, i dont care about wranglers, or XJs with their leaf rears, or broncos or toys, or anyting else that everyone else drives, we drive our ZJs and WJs becuase they are the ****. and we are the best, this is an elite offroading event. yea!
joseph humphrey 02-16-2004, 04:34 PM i'm in as long as i know that there are trails and runs for up beginners!
:newbie:
thanks for hookin' us norderners up!
Kornchild 02-17-2004, 02:00 PM There will be trails for everyone. I will have to go as a near stocker this year if I do any wheeling at all, no time to do my planned build. But I will have time to arrange what we need. I am seeing everyone is leaning toward mid july, thats works for me, I have jury duty in June :)
96grand 02-22-2004, 07:41 PM I know its spose to be a Grand only thing but if theres only a limited number of Grands in the north then whats the harm in having a few other "Jeeps" to make it fun and worth wile. I personaly don't care either way but I belive it should be up to the majority of the people going to the event.

As someone who has been to every GSW since they started and helped organize all of the GSWs since 1999, I don't think that there is any harm in inviting other 4x4s for a trail ride. But if it's not all Grands, then just don't call it a Grand Slam because it won't be. Move it to the trail ride section and call it a trail ride. There are lots of fine and fun trail rides organized that are not Grand Slams. It would be like taking a Toyota or Blazer on a Jeep Jamboree.
My two cents, again.
Bon&JohnsWJ 02-23-2004, 03:49 PM I've been at GSE 2003 and have been a part of GSMW since 2001 (currently organizer) and I don't think that having vehicles other than grands in the group at the event will negate it from being called a "Grand Slam".
The second day of GSE was pretty sloppy last year, and the group of grands that did run the advanced trails decided that a few others that wanted to run with them could be included in the pack, and it wasn't a huge issue for anyone. It was a decision made by that group at that time, not pre-planned, but it did happen.
Since the start of GSMW in 2001, Dave Jeglum was able to get some needed help from some of the local Jeep (CJ's, YJ's and TJ's) crowd near Paducah that were " intimately" familiar with the trails there, and in 2002 I also requested and received some help from some of the same people. Last year, we decided to be more self-sufficient, but due to the needs of being trail leader and needing to actually make some of the more difficult areas (and have a winch too), I used my YJ to serve the duty for my vehicle ( but we towed it down with the WJ  )
That being said, we didn't look to invite or include vehicles other than Grands in the event, but we also had such a small group that it wouldn't hurt to have a few capable SWB's with us that wandered into the pack.
I personally wouldn't look to include " other" vehicles, but if they showed up and ran with you, as long as there's no issues of the other rigs from being incapable of keeping up, I don't see a huge deal having them. Charging them fees or including them in raffles is not a great idea if that's part of the event.
It's your event, I'd suggest polling the attendees, but try to keep it as " Grand Oriented" as possible!

96grand 03-04-2004, 12:51 AM the only thing I was tring to say was I'm into Jeeps not just Grands yes it would be cool to just hang out with a bunch that share the same intrest in vehical choice as you but I would have just as much fun with a bunch of just plain Jeepers!
Alaska ZJ 03-07-2004, 04:53 PM I'll come. I gotta meat (not mispelled) Henley.
Grand Only was my vote. Oh and I think I could probably drag 2dgrez away from his steak joint.
Just make sure it is well after GSW. Oh and Where is this place in Minn. I am in Minot ND.
ZJipsomatic 03-07-2004, 05:24 PM we are pretty sure it is going to be july 12, 13 plus one day being either the 11th or the 14th. it sounds like that is where it will work out for most.

Alaska ZJ 03-09-2004, 06:53 AM Thanks man.
Hey anyone have some pictures of this place? What kind of terrain is it? I suppose being close to the lake it will be muddy and soft with lots of roots?
Kornchild 03-09-2004, 08:36 AM Actually its not lake bottom but instead on a big hill :). Lots of rocks, tight trails... Sharp rocks...bring at least 1 GOOD spair or trailer yoruself........
THere is mud to play in, and also rocks, basically a wide variety of stuff...
Toluidine 03-09-2004, 04:19 PM Here is a link to the MN-Jeep page. The thread has alot of links to a trip that a local group tool up there.

Just out of curiosity, why is it during the week? There's a good possibility I will come up Friday after work on the 9th, wheel the 10th/11th and head out if any others plan the same. Can't take anymore days off work; my 3 weeks are already booked up!
ZJipsomatic 03-16-2004, 01:52 PM sheet~!
the only days i got off work were for the weekend of the 16th, i couldnt remeber the date, and i knew it wasnt in the single digits. i ASSUMED.... that it was going to be a weekend, why the hell would we think it would be during the week?
jobs give us money to pour into our trucks.
jobs jobs jobs....
yeah, im down for the july15-18th. thats when i can go.
I'm in as long as the ZJ survives GSW and this still fits into my calander (I think it will.)
However, I'm voting for GRAND slam. It's not TJ slam, XJ slam, or any other kind of slam. it's a GRAAAAAND slam!
Only exception I've seen that made any sense at all was at GSMW last year where the trail guides were in TJ's. We needed guides.
Call me crazy ;)

heeal yea. I dont care about the guides, i guess, but it does seem kinda weird that a bunch of ZJ.Wjs show up and need other to show them the trails!! when its not like that at all actually ... :smoke:
and it will survive, the show must go on.
KevinsOffroad.com 04-11-2004, 08:42 PM As a Grand Slam organizer who has spent a LOT of time setting up similiar events in Utah, Colorado, and in Arizona, I wholeheartedly agree with Sandy in that the name "Grand Slam" needs to be reserved exclusively for Grand Cherokee runs only. There is no reason why the guides can't jump in with the driver of a Grand and lead the trail. I'm reasonably certain that Clay Cissell who runs this site would agree that the "Grand Slam" name needs to be preserved and protected for exclusively Grand Cherokee events. E-mail him and ask him before we move forward further.
(BTW, if you guys are hell-bent on inviting other rigs, please, please, PLEASE name it something differently...like "Gilbert Jeep-Freid" or "Minnesota All-Jeep Invitational" or something. I just got home from running trails all weekend in Moab at Easter Jeep Safari with nearly exclusively ALL Wranglers...and most of my buddies run either TJs or XJs, so I'm not a racist or anything, lol. However, I beg of you to please preserve the "Grand Slam" name.)
Very Sincerely,
Kevin
Alaska ZJ 04-12-2004, 05:28 AM I agree. Grand Slams are for Grand Cherokee's. Call it something else if your gonna invite and allow other rigs.
Oh and not that I am vehicle specific, but I won't be driving over to wheel with just anybody. If it's not a Grand Slam...I'll just drive 7 hours south to the Black Hills to wheel with just anybody.
ZJipsomatic 04-12-2004, 05:48 AM i dont know many times ive wanted to post just to agree with AK, so i figure that this one is worth it, since its all adding up.
Kornchild 04-14-2004, 12:01 PM agreed, this is going to be a Grand Cherokee only event......
I do need an idea on how many people are coming and that want to camp, I need to reserve teh spots, since they do fill up quite quickly in the summer.....
msvance 04-21-2004, 02:06 PM as far as I know I am in. I'll need a camping spot for this......
