Help please!

Edit: I think I found the problem. I climbed under my jeep to get a better look at the linkage for the shifter. I noticed what appears to be a green goumet of some type that isn't in a hole that it should be.

There is a metal bracket that the linkage from the shifter and the linkage from the transfercase attach to. On this bracket there is a metal rod that goes from the driverside to the passenger side of the jeep. With the linkage bracket in the middle .The driverside is simply placed in a bracket mounted to the frame. At the passenger side end of this rod there is a gromet that seems like it should be in a certain hole, I have no idea what this hole is drilled in. But it seems this rod helps to hold the linkage bracket in a central location. Can anyone help me out here, should I just force the gromet back into the hole, or should the gromet be replaced since it came out and does this gromet hold some type of fluid in the hole its supposed to be in?. I don't have a digital camera so I can't post a picture of what I'm talking about sorry.

If anyone understands my gibberish please chip in a bit of info.

Thanks, J

I recently went wheelin with my ZJ at a place called Nam in MA. It was a great experience, even though its still stock. I came home with 2 dents on my passengerside rocker and I thought that those were the only marks Nam left with me but....

It snowed today and I tried to put my ZJ into 4wheel drive and ran into a small issue. It seems my whole 4wheel drive shifter has been moved back about 1-1.5".

O - 2wheel drive usually

O - 4wheel full-time usually
\ - 4wheel fulltime now
O - 4wheel fulltime now Neutral usually
/ - 4wheel fulltime now

I lost 4wheel LO

and when I try to shift past where Nuetral usually is, I can see my drive shifter moving over to the right, is it possible that I hit my transfercase on a rock and moved it back or could it just be the linkage?
I had a friend shift through the 4wheels drives while I watched the linkage under the jeep, it doesn't appear to be hitting anything.
Also could someone take a picture of the side of there ZJ at the rocker panel level, it appears my transfer case might be hanging a little lower then I remember, although I may have just not noticed. How far should the bottom of the transfercase be from the bottom of the crossmember right infront of it?

Any input is appreciated

Thanks alot , J

The green grommet goes in the hole. It's just a piece of plastic that acts as a bushing.

I figured the grommet went in the hole, but I can't tell what that hole was drilled in, so I wasn't sure if by that comming out of that hole if maybe there was some kind of fluid that spilled out.

Is this grommet/rod under alot of stress, that could cause it to come loose again if I just force the old one back into place?

no fluid to come out, it is just a bracket, so just force it back in. Mine did the same thing, it took a little bit of prying, i used the handle side of my 1/2" socket wrench then it slide right in and had not fallen out again since. Also, i was having some trouble getting mine into 4lo before i fixed that...so fix it and see if your shifting lever does not line back up the way it used. Hope this helps!!

This bulletin involves installing a transfer case shifter repair kit.

1. Disconnect the shift rods from the torque shaft.

2. Remove the torque shaft by prying the shaft out of the green torque shaft bushing in the transmission bracket. (Refer to Figure 1) Install new bushings on the torque shaft for XJ and TJ.

3. Remove the bronze bushing/retainer and rubber gasket from the body bracket.

4. Remove the green torque shaft bushing from the transmission bracket and install the new bushing supplied in the kit. Insert the new gasket into the body bracket.

5. Install the bronze bushing/retainer and tightening the screws to 5 Nm (45 in. lbs.).

**NOTE :TJ AND XJ MODELS USE THE ORIGINAL TORQUE SHAFT WITH THE NEW PARTS SUPPLIED IN THE XJ/TJ KIT. ZJ/ZG REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF THE TORQUE SHAFT WHICH IS SUPPLIED IN THE ZJ/ZG KIT.**

6. Slide the boot on to the torque shaft and apply multipurpose grease (MOPAR p/n 04318063 or equivalent) to the area that the bronze bushing will contact.

7. Install the torque shaft and seat the boot on the bushing retainer flange.

8. Connect the transfer case shift linkage and adjust as necessary.
